I had the honor of shooting Ben & Nicole’s wedding a few years back so it was a thrill to find out they were pregnant with their first child and I was SO excited when Nicole’s sister Carli contacted me about a gift certificate for a newborn session! This is a wonderful gift for new parents– in the business of preparation for baby coming parents usually don’t think about how they’ll document the baby when she or he is small and new. The newborn session should be done in the first two weeks to really capture those type of images that show the small sleepy one all curled up, so it’s best to contact a photographer right away when you’ve given birth so you can schedule your session. I brought some of my gear over to their apartment and set up a blanket on a couch and a few other little areas we could try to pose this beautiful baby. Most often new parents prefer a photographer to come to them rather than bringing a new baby out into the world to a studio… the energy at home will be much more calm and relaxed– everything you need is nearby, and you don’t have to worry about packing up all yoru baby blankets, hats, diapers, etc, to bring with you. When they’re deep asleep baby’s are often malleable for a pose like you see here, or others that are more complicated to arrange– in bowls or the like… Typically I find even sleeping babies often resist being adjusted into such poses, so I let their responses dictate what we’ll do to capture them in their natural cuteness. Though we did get some really sweet shots of her sleeping and by herself, Sophia was definitely happiest on her father’s chest or in mother’s arms. It was a joy to capture this sweet family in their home and I hope to capture little Sophia again as she grows and changes!
