Heather & James planned their wedding for December in NYC so it was fitting that they went with a cozy venue like Housing Works Bookstore in Soho, with the majority of portraits being planned for inside the amazing Hotel on Rivington with a rain plan (that came in handy) for doing their wedding party group pictures in the nearby subway stations. Also fitting for a December wedding was the color scheme and decor– green dresses for the bridesmaids and Christmasy tablescapes with simple red runners and paper flower arrangements made from the pages of books (bookstore wedding!) with gold glitter and other green accents throughout. I also loved that they decorated the wedding themselves with help from their friends and personal touches like traditional Christmastime sweets created by them and their family members to share with the guests. And kudos to James for pulling off an impressive feat of technological wizardry! He hooked up a projector to play a live feed of tweets and pictures being posted with their wedding hashtag and all through the night guests could look up and see a random slideshow of their own recent posts up on the wall! This was a neat trick and one I expect to see more of in the future. Despite the fact that it rained all day everyone was in great spirits and the wedding party had fun with me going down into the subway station for their pictures– we even got a special song dedication to Heather & James from some buskers on the platform as we waited for the F to ride over to Housing Works. I loved shooting in the Broadway Lafayette station with the cool honeycomb lighting installation too. At the end of the night I made sure to take advantage of the rain and we got some sweet pictures of the couple under an umbrella out on the wet cobblestone street there in SoHo– I loved that there just happened to be about 20 cabs parked on either side of the road when we went out– it was a brilliant bit of luck to get all that NYC yellow to flavor my images! Congratulations to Heather & James, they pulled off a fantastic and uniquely modern wedding!
