My studio is in Long Island city in a building full of artists working in mediums like painting and sculpture… there are a few of us photographers in there but I do love being surrounded by fine artists, it’s quite inspiring. As one of the resident photographers I recently posted on the bulletin board to advertise my services as a portfolio shooter, and before I knew it Rachel Wren (a wonderful painter whose studio is right across the hall) was hitting me up to shoot her newest work for a grant application and use on her website… After shooting her paintings on Saturday I convinced her to let me make a portrait of her… every artist should have a good shot of themselves with their work, don’t you think?
This weekend I had the pleasure of shooting the talented Holly Slayton’s new collection of bridal headpieces. Her line, Artikal, will be featured at the world-reknowned Kleinfeld store this season so they needed a set of images for the website. She’s one of the leading designers of modern birdcage veils and other high-fashion pieces. I love her fascinators– the feathers, the felt, the silk flowers, they’re all so beautiful! (I will most definately be wearing something by her at my wedding this September! I’m overwhelmed by the number of fabulous pieces to choose from, and I haven’t even been to her studio for an appointment yet…) It was cold outside so we shot in the studio with three models, makeup artist Stephanie Joyce and hair stylist Liane DeStefano, and of course Holly was there to place her headpieces… what a great team! Thanks for the great work everyone… here’s a sneak peak at a few of my favorite images!
I got the chance to shoot this panorama (it’s actually a bunch of shots stitched together!) from a client’s balcony in Brooklyn. Ovi and Joana are packing up and leaving behind their great apartment and financial jobs to go on a backpacking trip around the world! This newlywed couple wanted some shots of themselves hanging out in their sweet digs so they can always remember their life together here in good old NYC… I actually bartered the shoot for Joana’s practically brand new beautiful womens city-cruiser bicycle with a comfy seat– they’re trying to get rid of basically everything they own, can you imagine?! What a beauty it is too. It’s even light enough to carry up and down my stairs. Now if i can just get my photo backpack light enough to ride back and forth from the studio…
Quite a view! Did they live there at the time of 9/11? That would have been especially surreal and alarming.
Send photo of bike!!
Kathy came in with her husband for maternity portraits, she’s due in about a month– I *may* even get to shoot her home birth if it doesn’t conflict with another birth I have coming up! Yay, home births! Check out some of my favorites below. All images are shown here with my clients’ permission of course.
