Karina & Carl’s Wedding at New Leaf Restaurant

Karina & Carl were married on a beautifully warm Saturday afternoon in November at Linden Terrace in Fort Tryon Park, with a reception to follow at New Leaf Restaurant, just down hill from the lovely ceremony.  I began the day with Karina and her bridesmaids and captured her getting ready with the expert hair and makeup help from her daughter Adaliz, who works in the field.  After getting dressed and sharing a toast with her friends we were off to New Leaf for a first look with Carl and some portraits around the park.  My assistant photographer and I arrived first and captured Carl and his groomsmen as they put on their boutennieres, and soon enough Karina had arrived and was ready to embrace her fiance!  Carl couldn’t have looked more thrilled when he turned around and saw her there in her wedding gown.  We took full advantage of the beautiful weather that day and walked through the park to photograph the couple alone– then Karina had his groomsmen reveal her wedding gift to him, an upright bass that he’d longed to own for years!  The look on his face was priceless and he immediately started playing it.  After taking some wedding party and family group shots we did another quick round of portraits with the couple further out in the park while their guests began arriving for the ceremony, which had so many sweet moments.  The couple wrote their own vows, something I always love to witness.  After being announced as husband and wife we did a few more family pictures and headed down to New Leaf where the party awaited.  Karina and Carl had kept it simple and put together clean modern florals with golden bottles on the tables, a DIY project that worked beautifully.  Highlights of the reception included the photobooth (they had built their own backdrop for it!), some very moving toasts from the maids of honor and best man, and even a performance by Carl’s band, and sparklers at the end of the night!  A grand time was had by all.  Congratulations to Karina & Carl!

Angela & Greg’s Wedding at The Roundhouse at Beacon Falls

Angela and Greg were married on a lovely Saturday afternoon in October at St. Joachim Catholic Church, and celebrated with their guests that evening at The Roundhouse in Beacon, NY.  We arrived at their hotel in Fishkill to find Angela smiling for miles.  She might be the happiest bride I’ve ever had the pleasure of capturing!  The excitement in the room was palpable as she had her hair and makeup done.  She and Greg sent each other wedding day gifts that morning and it was so sweet getting to hear her read his letter to her aloud.  Since they had time planned for portraits between the ceremony and reception there was no need for a first look, so after capturing the getting ready portion of the day my assistant photographer and I drove straight to the church.  I have shot at the Roundhouse a bunch of times before but had never gotten to shoot at St. Joachim, so I was particularly excited by this combination, and it was beautiful!  After tying the knot in a traditional Catholic ceremony complete with full Mass, Angela and Greg retreated for a few minutes of private time as we gathered our gear and got ready for their couple portraits around The Roundhouse grounds. We made use of the beautiful waterfall, the abandoned train track, and brick exteriors common to this location. Their wedding party and family groups came next, and for this the light was just right for me to shoot with the waterfall in the background, which is not always possible if it’s too sunny out, but makes for wonderful shots when it is doable.  We finished the list of group shots before guests began arriving for the cocktail hour, which was held on the back patio and lawn just outside the reception space, and finally guests were invited inside the beautiful brick building (an old hat factory!) overlooking the water.  We had set up a photobooth for the reception and guests enjoyed taking their own picture to their hearts delight throughout the evening. Highlights of the evening included a heartfelt set of toasts that were a testament to what a perfect match these two are for one another, a sweet set of father-daughter and mother-son dances, and a great thank-you speech from Angela and Greg towards the end of the evening.  To my delight, Angela’s glowing smile never quit!  I was so honored to capture this fabulous celebration of love.  Congratulations to Angela and Greg!

Emily & Robin’s Wedding at Aurora, Brooklyn

Emily & Robin were married on a beautiful Saturday in October at Aurora, a charmingly rustic-industrial style bar and restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, featuring a tented outdoor area.  They didn’t want to see one another before their ceremony, and since they also wanted to have a good chunk of time to spend on couple portraits— enough to hit some picturesque spots in Brooklyn, we decided to swap the engagement portrait session I included for a post-wedding portrait session shortly after the wedding… This enabled them to get the most time possible to enjoy the wedding celebration with friends and still have an opportunity for portraits together in their wedding clothes with picturesque backgrounds— this was a great choice that enabled them to get exactly what they wanted out of my collection, and the portrait session went beautifully down in DUMBO just 2 weekends later- see my favorites in the photo set below!  On wedding day my assistant photographer and I split up for the getting ready since Robin was at their apartment with her parents as Emily was at a hotel with her mother and sisters getting ready.  We met up at the venue in time to capture the details and the guests as they arrived and settled in for the celebration. Emily and Robin’s ceremony was intimate and moving, featuring a reading by a friend, vows they wrote themselves, and an officiant who knew them well.  After walking back down the aisle and allowing guests to move into the bar for cocktails they gathered their families and bridal party members for some group portraits in front of the lovely ribbons-and-lights backdrop adorning the front of the ceremony space, and then it was off to the celebration!  The evening’s highlights included a series of toasts from friends and family, Emily’s father and a good friend playing a song for the couple’s first dance, and some wild moves on the dance floor enhanced by props that migrated out of the photobooth area. A great time was had by all at this fabulous wedding!  Congratulations to Emily & Robin!

Sarah & Anthony’s Wedding at Shadow Lawn

Sarah & Anthony were married at a gem of a venue called Shadow Lawn, in High Falls, NY. We arrived early and scouted around to plan out spots we could shoot the portraits of the couple and their wedding party and family groups both indoors and outdoors since the weather was iffy at best– it had been raining on and off for a while and it seemed unlikely we’d get much opportunity to shoot outside, but we lucked out and had no rain for the duration of our planned picture time! Though the ground was soggy the light was beautiful and I was able to take Sarah and Anthony for a quick walk around the grounds and I got shots of them with a sweet horse and barn scene I had found earlier. Wisely they had opted to re-locate their ceremony from outdoors to inside the big red barn where their cocktail hour would be hosted– it could have started raining at any point basically so this was a no brainer, especially because the barn in question made for a charming setting for their vows, and afterwards the staff easily transformed the space into the planned cocktail hour with just a quick removal of chairs while Sarah and Anthony retreated to a room downstairs where they signed their marriage license. I was able to walk them over to a few more spots I loved for some ‘just married’ pictures and then we all rejoined the guests up in the cocktail party. Guests were then treated to a tented reception complete with dinner and dancing just up the hill back behind a historic stone house, the central building at Shadow Lawn. Highlights of the evening included the sweet toasts from Sarah’s parents and the maids of honor and best man, as well as a gorgeous tablescapes featuring boards of cheese and figs, beatiful handcrafted pottery made by Sarah’s mother, and rose gold accents throughout the event! Finally we noticed it was more or less raining tiny droplets after dark, so I took Sarah and Anthony out under an umbrella for another fun ‘rain shot,’ which is something of an obsession for me whenever I’m at a wedding and there’s night-time rain, and I loved what we got– the tiny droplets lit up in different colors for some mysterious reason, and though they were fewer of them than during a hard rain they just looked like magical little globules hanging in space. Despite it being damp, Shadow Lawn stuck with the plan and at the end of the night, a small bonfire was lit in a clearing just downhill from the tent, and it looked amazing– this is one of my favorite shots from the day actually, check it out! Congratulations to Sarah & Anthony– it was an honor and a pleasure capturing your wonderful wedding!
