Kevin wrote to me with a wonderful proposal idea and wanted to see if I could shoot it in a way I wouldn’t be noticed to surprise his intended. He had had a storybook created with help from an illustrator– it looks amazing and tells the story of how he and his girlfriend had met, where they went on their initial dates, things that happened in their lives leading up to his proposal, and even had the illustrator draw them in the outfits they were wearing in these stories. He had me arrive early and place the book on a shelf we pre-planned for him to ‘find it’ at Books of Wonder, a fabulous independant children’s book store who’s proprietors were so gracious to let us do this… On the way to dinner reservations with her he made sure they had some extra time to kill and suggested they duck in and browse for a minute… his plan worked perfectly and she was so delighted by the book and his proposal at the end of it. I loved capturing this for them and was able to make a few sweet night portraits by some trees down the block that were lit up with Christmas lights. Congratulations!
Karin & Michael were married on a beautiful fall evening in November at The Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The location is a stunning example of “rustic industrial” done right– the facility has beautiful deck areas for viewing the statue of liberty and manhattan skyline across the water, and of course the sunset was lovely as it went down behind the couple and their wedding party during the tail end of our outdoor portraits. I started the day with Karin’s preparation while my assistant shot with the guys over at the Gild Hotel in Manhattan. After a sweet first look indoors, Karin & Michael were willing to brave the windy conditions and let me get some portraits of them outside– I love what we got– it was cold of course so she kept her chic white leather jacket on most of the time! Once back upstairs safe indoors we shot the wedding party and family groups before guests began to arrive for the evening’s celebration. After a Ketubah signing in the bridal suite with family and friends witnessing, all made their way to the ceremony space. I was moved by the officiant’s wonderful presentation– she had a lot people in tears it seemed! Afterwards guests enjoyed a foodie-friendly cocktail hour before making their way down one level to the reception space, which was decked out and looking incredible with candles and flowers and twinkling string lights over the dance floor. Highlights of the reception included some very sweet toasts, a special anniversary dance for the bride’s parents, and an incredible performance by 45 Riots! Congratulations to Karin & Michael!

Rachel & Jonathan are getting married next June at Cold Spring Harbor Country Club on Long Island. For their engagement portraits they selected a few sweet spots in lower Manhattan– namely South Street Seaport and Battery Park. We met on a cobble-stoned corner downtown and made our way towards the water. What a beautiful day we had! After getting some shots out by the boats and a Brooklyn Bridge view we hopped in a cab and headed down towards the southern tip of Manhattan near the Staten Island Ferry. From there we walked through the park hitting several areas this couple was fond of from their walks there. Check out my favorites from their shoot!
Laura and John were wed on a beautiful October Saturday at one of Abigail Kirsch’s newer venues, Current, at Chelsea Piers. We were just blocks from the High Line Park so naturally I shot Laura & John’s couple portraits up there and then returned to meet their wedding party and family groups for the rest of the formals inside since there were fairly strong winds over there by the Hudson river. I was particularly excited to see what Laura had in store for us as she is an editor at Real Simple, and WOW she came up with such great ideas for her wedding decor! I was particularly enamored with the Apples tagged as escort cards- they made such a pretty entryway table display! I was floored by the “floating ring” Chuppah put together by the florists at Atlas. I’ve never seen anything like it– they did a marvelous job and it looked incredible there during the ceremony. Another neat idea was having the guests sign and write messages on Jenga pieces that the couple can keep and use. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that they had a gorgeous cake from Momofuku Milk Bar— check it out! Not only were the details incredible but there was so much love in the air all day long– from their first look through the toasts to the parent dances, the atmosphere was rich with sweet emotions. I particularly loved hearing the couple’s own toast in which Laura told a very funny story from the beginning of their relationship, when she and John were separated long distance but knew it was real even though they’d only just met a little while before she’d left the country. It is so nice when couples aren’t afraid to share their experiences and tell a story or two at their wedding– you can always tell that the guests love hearing these stories, and of course so do I! It was such an honor and a pleasure capturing these special wedding memories for Laura & John– with any luck maybe we’ll get to read Laura’s wedding planning tips on Real Simple sometime soon!
Great photos. I love seeing birth photography. Having had such a positive experience giving birth to my daughter, I love to share in others’ happiness in the birth of their own children. Kudos to you and all other birth photographers who photograph births. I can only imagine how tough it must be with long hours and never knowing when you’re going to be needed.
