The Birth of Vera

The following is Q&A with Wendy after her recent home birth in Manhattan.  I was so honored to be there and capture this special experience for their family and to share with my viewers both here on my blog and ultimately in my documentary photography book on Home Birth.  I hope the photos and story will inspire those of you who may be considering a home birth in NYC to get in touch about having your labor photographed as part of my project– I’m always seeking subjects! — Sarah

How did your labor go?  Describe your birth experience as you remember it…How did you feel about the care you received?
Wonderful. It was the second time I used JJB Midwifery and they are so competent and lovely to work with.
Did you feel safe?  What went well?  What didn’t?
I felt safe in my environment since I was able to have the planned home birth I had envisioned to bring my daughter into the world. I spoke up when I had a need and everyone listened and respected my requests and feelings. The only aspect that didn’t go as planned was that I lost a lot of blood when delivering the placenta because part of the sac was attached to my uterine wall. But my midwife handled the situation calmly and effectively and was able to stop the bleeding before anything serious happened.
Describe the experience of pain during your labor and if possible describe you handled it in your mind, and what, if anything physical, helped you manage it (massage, birthing pool, acupuncture, postures, breathing, etc).
One of the reasons I love having home births is that I was able to labor in the places and positions that felt right to me. I started out in the tub, moved to the bed, then to our soft ottoman to “shake the baby” down into the correct position (she was posterior before that), then to the pool and finally to the bed again. I had back labor and my doula and birth assistant put pressure on my back and provided massage to help alleviate the pain. I also studied a Hypnobabies program and was able to practice deep relaxation to manage the pain.
How did the reality compare with the birth plan?  What surprised you?
Everything went as planned except that I didn’t end up having a water birth like I did with my first. The baby’s heart rate was indicating that she was in stress after a period of time laboring in the birth pool so my midwife moved me to the bed where I ended up birthing.

Describe the moments after birth, and/or what went through your mind when you were meeting your new baby for the first time.
I was relieved that she was finally here after being 17 days overdue. And I felt really happy once she started crying and breathing well.

Emily & Adrian’s Intimate Destination Wedding at Buttermilk Falls Inn

Emily & Adrian are a sweet australian couple that contacted me over a year ago when they were planning their destination wedding in New York’s Hudson River Valley.  They were planning an intimate gathering with close family and friends over the course of a few days and had selected Buttermilk Falls Inn after having seen Katie & Sharmilan’s wedding there.  When we arrived we had some time to scout the grounds and we picked out spots for portraits before heading in to shoot Emily’s preparation.  Their first look was very sweet– poor Adrian was feeling a bit sick but you’d never know it from his enthusiasm and happiness throughout the day.  Highlights for me included the wonderful ceremony performed by the fantastic Christopher Shelley, who nailed it, and a relaxed and leisurely intimate foodie-friendly cocktail hour and dinner that guests enjoyed over the course of the evening together.  The icing on the cake?  Er, cheese-cake, well, actually Cake Made Of CHEESE WHEELS (yes isn’t that brilliant?!) The icing on the cake had to be getting shots of Emily on the dance floor in her gorgeous swing-style kneelength wedding gown complete with petticoat… every time she spun around the skirt flared out in a fun way, and I loved capturing her joy out there.  Adrian is one lucky groom!  Check out my favorites from the day below…

Alli & Parker’s Wedding at The Palm House

Alli & Parker’s wedding was start to finish a fantastic day full of love and sweetness and fun!  Though the weather called for probable rain things held out through their first look and portraits and sure enough they were able to do their ceremony outside under a beautiful giant willow tree at The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, where they had planned it.  Guests enjoyed cocktails and around the waterlilly ponds before entering the beautiful glass-enclosed Palm House reception space decked out in flowers arranged by the brilliant Sachi Rose.  Speaking of Sachi, check out these lovely bouquets!  I was also thrilled to see the wonderful Colleen Crumbcake arrive to DJ, she always knocks it out of the park and this wedding was no exception– this bunch did not waste any time getting their groove on, and I had a blast capturing the party!  Highlights included a hilarious toast during which the groom’s mother strongly encouraged the use of masks and gloves for use on the honeymoon (to prevent ebola infection of course) after which Alli & Parker donned the protective gear for a ‘kiss’ and Parker and his mom wore them for their mother-son dance!  A fabulous time was had by all– congrats to Alli & Parker!

Alexis & Rich’s Wedding in Tarrytown

Alexis & Rich’s wedding day was full of spontaneous fun and delight.  With their ceremony and reception all happening at the Tarrytown Doubletree in Westchester, NY, we planned to take the couple and their wedding party for wedding day portraits at a nearby waterfront park a few minutes down the road.  My assistant and I arrived early to scout the park and the hotel and I was inspired to see not only a pretty rocky shoreline and lovely trees but a swingset and other cute elements tucked back in the park.  On our way back to the car I noticed a neighbor of the park was hosting what looked like a family reunion or child’s birthday party, complete with Bouncy House in their little yard by the shore… I knew it was a longshot that a bride would be up for climbing into a bouncy house in her dress but I went down and asked the party-givers if they’d let us take a few pictures inside it if I came back later– needless to say they were all for it!  When I mentioned the possibility to Alexis during her preparation she was totally game!  Not only that but she and Rich were up for swinging on the swingset too– after which they were beckoned over to have a hot dog with a bunch of people having a picnic and barbeque there in the park!  It just goes to show it never hurts to ask a client to try your wild ideas– you just might get something really fun and unique!  After meeting up with the rest of the crew for wedding party and family pictures we all headed back to the hotel and prepared for the ceremony.  Highlights of this wedding included some moving readings during the ceremony, a hilarious moment during Alexis’ mother’s toast, and a series of special dances with Alexis and the many father-figures who have been there for her throughout her life.  I was blown away by how much fun this couple has together on the dance floor– they have serious chemistry and know how to get down out there!  I love the last shot here especially– the couple was sharing a passionate kiss in the middle of the dance floor and this little boy in the foreground was just staring and taking it in… couldn’t resist getting that shot from down lower to emphasize his attention… congrats again to Alexis & Rich, you were such a blast to shoot for!

Jaime & Dave’s wedding at Tappan Hill Mansion

I knew when I met Jaime that her wedding would be sweet and vibrant, just like she is– sure enough this beautiful day at Tappan Hill Mansion was filled with cheerful excitement, pretty pinks hues, and laughter with friends and family.  We arrived early to scout the location and I found some sweet spots up on a balcony that worked well and got excited about shots I could do in the circular lobby and in the front door frame (check out my favorites below!).  Of course for the group shots we had to use the view from the ceremony site, it was so lovely to look out at the water in the distance.  After a sweet ceremomy performed by a family friend, we all headed back into the mansion for their party.  Highlights of this wedding included a moving love letter that arrived over email during preparation and which Jaime had her MOH read to her aloud out of nerves (um, Dave, you rule!)– as well as some pretty great toasts from Jaime’s best friend and a tag team of Dave’s brothers, and last but not least the VERY inspired dance floor action– this couple can seriously shake it!  I was able to steal them outside for a few more portraits when the sun was setting and I love what we got.  Congratulations, Jaime & Dave, you guys are so obviously in it to win it and you deserve every happiness!
