Angela & Dave’s August wedding at The Palm House

What an amazing summer we’re having here in Brooklyn– it’s been my pleasure to shoot several weddings in this beautiful weather at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens’ lovely venue The Palm House and I feel *so* lucky to have shot this one! Angela & Dave are just the most sweet, fun, down to earth couple– and after seeing their families in action I can see where they get it from! Most importantly, they’re perfect for each other (and it shows!)… I got to shoot their rehearsal dinner the night before at the wonderful Frankie’s Spuntino in Brooklyn– followed by an after-party at 61 Local with even more friends and family in attendance! On the morning of her wedding Angela and the women she’s close to enjoyed some relaxing yoga together and went to get prepared for the big day at Brooklyn’s Parlor Salon.  I met them there to capture the tail end of this process while my 2nd shooter Ryan was with Dave at their apartment.  We convened for their first look and portraits (always nice to get these taken care of before the ceremony so the couple can go celebrate with friends and family after the ceremony) over in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.  After a very beautiful ceremony performed by the fantastic Lissa Gundlach we headed to a lovely cocktail hour on the terrace, followed by a wonderful evening reception indoors.  It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day for this sweet couple and their families to come together and celebrate love.  Congratulations to Angela & Dave!

It was beautiful, not to mention probably the most enjoyable wedding I have been to.

Rorie & Adam’s Wedding at The Palm House

When you meet Rorie & Adam it’s immediately clear they are one of those uniquely beloved power couples who are all about celebrating life and having fun– so naturally they have a ton of great friends who care about them deeply– in fact, this was definitely the biggest wedding party I’ve ever worked with!  We had 28 people including the ring bearer and flower girl.  Intimidating for a photographer?  Yes, a bit!  Loads of fun?  Heck yes!  This was truly an example of “the more the merrier!”  After getting ready in Manhattan’s Grand Hyatt Hotel and shooting a sweet first look in the lobby and some photos of the couple with a sweet vintage Rolls Royce they were to travel in we loaded up into a party bus to head over to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens… about a 5 blocks into the journey I saw they had turned somewhere they weren’t supposed to- I called Rorie and discovered that sure enough something had gone wrong– in fact the Rolls was having trouble and they’d need to join us in the party bus… our driver swung back around and picked them up and onward we went towards our destination– the Palm House at Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, surely one of my favorite venues.  After battling heavy traffic and arriving later than expected we jumped right into wedding party and family group shots, catching up to the timeline so they could go rehearse the ceremony when scheduled.  Rorie & Adam then signed a beautiful Ketubah and with the weather being absolutely perfect they had their ceremony out under a big willow tree just a short walk into the gardens.  Guests were treated to a cocktail hour on the terrace before entering the glorious glass room that is the Palm House– and it was all decked out with purplish uplighting!  I love what they did with their tablescapes– incorporating beautiful driftwood and mercury glass candle holders with flowers and hanging crystals.  After a sweet first dance, an energetic Hora, and a very moving set of toasts, the band took the party to another level– and these guys weren’t messing around!   I was glad I had my ladder with me as it enabled me to get shots of the action from the perimeter of the floor when it was too packed to shoot from amidst the dancers.  It must have been so amazing for them to be surrounded by so much loving energy  from family and friends on their wedding day– I loved capturing the emotion at this incredible couple’s wedding day and it was just a joy to be a witness to this celebration!  Congratulations to Rorie & Adam– may the good times roll on between you for ever and ever!

We have never ever experienced a wedding like Rorie an Adam’s in our entire life. There are no words to express how fabulous the venue was. We wish it could have gone on for ever and ever. A true fairy tale wedding!

Lauren & Dano’s wedding The Fontainebleau Inn

Lauren & Dano’s wedding was an eagerly awaited event for all of us that know them.  They’ve been a tight and obviously perfectly matched couple for many years now, so to finally celebrate their union with a sweet and intimate weekend at this gorgeous location in The Fingerlakes was and honor and a joy and I was so thrilled they hired me to capture it for them.  Knowing Lauren since our college days at Wesleyan I suspected she would come up with something really fun and different for her wedding decor, and sure enough there was a super-cute pinwheel motif consistent throughout the wedding– pinwheels instead of bridesmaid bouquets, pinwheels sprinked in her bouquet and the centerpieces, pinwheels shaped cookies as favors, etc. The colors too, were bright and bold blues and greens with some yellows int he flowers too.  Our mutual friend Ben Simington officiated the ceremony, and he did such a brilliant job I think I need to insist that he take up officiating Central Park elopements back here in the city– he had a fantastic presence and voice, striking just the right balance of humor and focused sincerity, and I mean, what with that beard, well,  he really looks the part!  The setting of The Fontainebleau Inn was incredible and the weather played nice for the most part– nice enough that we went through with the outdoor ceremony down by the lake near a giant tree. As you can see, Lauren looked incredible in this amazing dress by Leanne Marshall– a perfect fit for the Old Country Inn style setting I must say. And of course what took the wedding over the top for me was an amazing round of moving and hilarious toasts…  Congratulations to this fantastic couple– they deserve every happiness!   A big thanks to my wonderful husband Keith for his excellent assistance and company throughout the weekend!

Thanks, Eric, it was great catching up with the family– I’ve been so honored and thrilled to be there to capture these moments… and even happier for Lauren and Dano that they’ve found one another and forged such a strong and beautiful relationship! Such love is rare and precious indeed!

Gena & Josh’s wedding at The Hyatt Regency on the Hudson, Jersey City

Gena and Josh currently live in Boston, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to shoot their engagement portraits here in New York City at Lincoln Center last fall.  As the wedding approached we were worried about the weather looking dicey and it wasn’t until earlier that afternoon that we were sure the ceremony would indeed be outside on the pier with The Hyatt’s amazing view across the Hudson.  We arrived early so as to make sure there was time to shoot all the special details before Gena got into her dress, and we picked out a nice spot along the walk out to the pier for the couple’s first look.  Gena looked incredible and Josh was blown away.  I made some quick portraits of the couple and then we met the family out by the railing so as to capture their family groups with the skyline as a backdrop, and then got ourselves out of the sun and wind for a break with the wedding party groups.  After signing their Ketubah we went out to the pier and prepared for their ceremony– we had a blue sky and though it was a little windy I am so thrilled they went for doing it outside!  This spot was a perfect place for a summer ceremony, and the cocktail hour on the terrace was delightful.  We all went upstairs to find the Manhattan Ballroom decked out with a baby blue color scheme and lots of lovely hydrangeas.  Guests danced the night away to the sounds of the Russell Bennett Band, one of Hank Lane’s always-excellent outfits.  We set up my open-air photo booth in the adjoining space outside the Ballroom and guests enjoyed taking their own pictures with the fun props Gena & Josh had picked out as well as a few of my dry-erase ‘speech bubbles’… Though this reception was jam-packed with activity we did manage to find time to take the happy couple out on the balcony for some quick portraits both towards the end of magic hour and again at the end of our coverage to capture them with the beautiful Manhattan skyline at night.  A special thanks goes to my awesome assistants Ryan & Nick for their excellent work at this wedding.

Jaymie & Brad’s engagement portraits at Coney Island

Jaymie & Brad are getting married in October at Fresh Meadow Country Club on Long Island and when we discussed possible locations for their engagement session Jaymie explained she’d had a longstanding desire to have a fun photoshoot down at Coney Island– what a great idea!  I hadn’t shot there in several years actually and was curious to see what may have changed since Hurricane Sandy hit the area hard last fall.  Well it turns out that Coney Island is open for business and in full effect– the beach was full of bathers, the parks are full of rides and everything was up and running at full blast.  We met at the corner of Surf and Stillwell right there by the train station and our shoot was scheduled for the day *after* the famous Mermaid Parade— I was worried the place would be trashed but it seemed normal enough…  in our whirlwind tour we hit some The Wonder Wheel, bumper cars, one of those crazy spinning rides, Jaymie won a stuffed animal in a shooting game on her first try (and promptly gave it to the little boy playing next to her), and explored the new “Luna Park” area as well.  Of course we also hit the beach, and ate at the famous Nathan’s!  Though it was a sunny June day at the end of a hot week the strong breezes coming off the ocean kept us comfortable and I enjoyed this shoot immensely.  At the conclusion of the session we all enjoyed some melt-in-your-mouth fresh cotton candy.  You gotta love Coney Island– definitely worth a visit if you’ve never been!  Check out my favorites from their shoot below!
