Melissa & Ben’s Brooklyn Engagement Session

Melissa & Ben are getting married next May at The Rhinecliff Hotel and we were eager to get their engagement portraits done before it got too hot! We started the session at their apartment to try and capture a family portrait with their two sweet cats, but their beautiful Maine coon cat, Arthur, was feeling way too shy to participate (can’t win’em all!), so instead we did some fun lifestyle shots of them at their kitchen table reading the paper, playing scrabble, and hanging out in their beautiful back yard, where they have been growing some little plants. I even got Ben to get out his sax and serenade Melissa as she watched him from the some flower-covered stairs! Shades were definitely in order for that particular shot! After heading outside we did some shots around their block and then hopped in the car to make our way to their old neighborhood. Ben is a great driver and a *patient* one I can attest since we had to look a while for a parking spot near the Brooklyn Promenade but these two were so cute to shoot in the car and it gave us chance to chat more!  When we did find a spot we got to walk over and make a nice portrait in front of their old apartment in Brooklyn Heights (which has such a cool facade/front door they said people used to stop and take pictures in front of it all the time!) and then walked down to the promenade just in time to capture the lights going on over on the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. Congratulations, Melissa & Ben! I’m psyched for the wedding!

Laura & Axuve’s wedding at The Hammond Museum (Salem NY)

Laura & Axuve contacted me before they even booked their wedding venue inquiring about my availability.  After being guests at a wedding I shot for their friends Amy & Drew a few years back they were determined to hire me to shoot their wedding and so they made sure to pick a date that I had open.  I was so touched and honored by this– it was a first in my carreer and I desperately hope that the photographs have captured the event as they wished it to be captured.  When I found out about their venue I was intrigued–The Hammond Museum has a Japanese Stroll Garden adjoining the interior space and wedding ceremonies often take place on this tiny little island in the midst of a lily-pad pond, such that the wedding party walks out to it across a little stepping stone “bridge,” while guests watch from chairs looking towards the pond.  It’s a unique and beautiful arrangement for a ceremony and we were distraught when the week preceding the wedding had so much rain that the stone bridge had become submerged to the point that it looked like Laura & Axuve would have to pick another spot in the garden for their ceremony.  After emails about rainboots on bridesmaids and galoshes on groomsmen we had resigned ourselves to the fact that plan B would probably be an alternate location, but then it was sunny on friday and the good folks at the Hammond must have rented a pump or something because when we arrived on Saturday to scout it looked totally cross-able with each stone presenting a dry step to cross upon!  Everyone was thrilled and the ceremony went off without a hitch.  Another thing I loved was that they had an “unplugged” ceremony  in the sense that the couple had their officiant ask the guests not to take pictures during the ceremony– but to be present instead.  Laura said later that when she looked out at her guests she saw all their faces looking back and there was a quality of silence and attention that I must say is rare at weddings these days– usually there are a lot of other cameras and phones clicking and beeping during these moments and I think we all found it to be a heightened experience as a result of the ‘unplugged’ directive… I certainly got some great ‘down the aisle’ shots without the normal bunch of phone/camera-guest-arms sticking out, I can tell you that!  Other highlights included a choreographed first dance (swing!) number that had the crowd hooting and hollering and a brilliant and spontaneous group hug during the final song of the night, New York, New York!  Ok, enough of my writing, on to the pictures!  Congratulations to the Salazars!  Laura & Axuve, your love was radiant all day and all night and I was so honored to capture this special wedding!

Shannon & Pat’s Brooklyn engagement session: Smith Street to the Promenade

Shannon & Pat are getting married this coming September up at the Roundhouse at Beacon Falls, where I had the pleasure of shooting Johanna & Greg’s wedding this past November!  I was thrilled to book another wedding up at this beautiful venue and am even more excited after hanging out with Shannon and Pat during their cute engagement session down around their neighborhood in Brooklyn.  I’d been to Smith Street before of course, it’s famous for being a restaurant row of sorts, and my husband works at a school not too far from there, but I’d never shot a session in this area before and I have to say it was a blast!  So much color and texture to work with (and that’s what I look for during a session) I could have gone on for hours… but we definitely wanted to hit the Promenade around sunset and we made our way to the water at just the right time.  Check out my favorites from their shoot!

Baby Sophia at home with Nicole & Ben: Father’s Day newborn session!

I had the honor of shooting Ben & Nicole’s wedding a few years back so it was a thrill to find out they were pregnant with their first child and I was SO excited when Nicole’s sister Carli contacted me about a gift certificate for a newborn session! This is a wonderful gift for new parents– in the business of preparation for baby coming parents usually don’t think about how they’ll document the baby when she or he is small and new. The newborn session should be done in the first two weeks to really capture those type of images that show the small sleepy one all curled up, so it’s best to contact a photographer right away when you’ve given birth so you can schedule your session. I brought some of my gear over to their apartment and set up a blanket on a couch and a few other little areas we could try to pose this beautiful baby. Most often new parents prefer a photographer to come to them rather than bringing a new baby out into the world to a studio… the energy at home will be much more calm and relaxed– everything you need is nearby, and you don’t have to worry about packing up all yoru baby blankets, hats, diapers, etc, to bring with you. When they’re deep asleep baby’s are often malleable for a pose like you see here, or others that are more complicated to arrange– in bowls or the like… Typically I find even sleeping babies often resist being adjusted into such poses, so I let their responses dictate what we’ll do to capture them in their natural cuteness. Though we did get some really sweet shots of her sleeping and by herself, Sophia was definitely happiest on her father’s chest or in mother’s arms. It was a joy to capture this sweet family in their home and I hope to capture little Sophia again as she grows and changes!

Estelle & Bo’s Intimate Central Park Wedding with Lunch Reception at Public

Estelle and Bo have been keeping their long distance relationship alive and well longer than most people could handle– and they’ve done so well at this that they’ve taken the next step and gotten married!  Since Estelle lives in Singapore (she has a great urban planning job there) we scheduled a 3-way Skype call for our consultation, which was different and fun for me (I’m something of a Skype novice, but we made it work!) though of course I love meeting with clients in person at my studio.  I could tell from Estelle’s description of her vision that this wedding would be super sweet and I’m so glad they booked me!  We began the day with some getting-ready coverage at the fabulous Chambers Hotel.  After a first look in front of it’s grand front door I took them for a round of couple portraits in the surrounding blocks, taking advantage of the “LOVE” sculpture and other neat opportunities along our walk up to Central Park.  Since they wanted to have an intimate wedding with their close friends it made sense to have a small ceremony at the Dene Shelter, after which we did some group shots with them and their friends and then all headed down to Public, where they’d reserved the Wine Room for a private lunch reception!  I was glad I had brought my fisheye lens as it enabled me to really capture the prettiness of the Dene Shelter with the sunlight splashing in through between it’s beams… Christopher Frost Shelley performed a touching and heartfelt ceremony for us an we were treated to a “Top 10 list” that had everyone laughing… A shout out to Nick is in order, he was super helpful in rolling my bag all over town while I stayed focused on shooting and he also got some great shots during the ceremony from different angles!  At the Wine Room I was impressed by the foodie-friendly details and excellent service– everything looked amazing from the scones to the cocktails to the entrees and the tablescape itself.  Estelle and Bo had thought of every detail– they even had a set of customized M&M’s to give their guests as favors.  I couldn’t be happier for this couple– if they can make it through the kind of long distance relationship they’ve been able to beautifully nurture to this point I think it’s safe to say they’re one of those meant-to-be couples that will make it no matter what!
