Marlene & Richard’s Engagement Portraits: Brooklyn Bridge Park

Marlene & Richard are tying the knot at Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s new event space, The Atrium, after twenty-something years together!  I was originally contacted by their daughter, Sid– who has been instrumental in the wedding planning–who knows, she may have a carreer as a wedding coordinator ahead of her!  I was delighted to find Marlene wearing this bright coral dress when we met in Brooklyn for their session.  It was amazing how sweet these two are after so many years together– I want to know their secret to lasting love!!!  We hit some of my favorite little spots in the walk down to the water and then fully explored the various park space down around the Brooklyn Bridge.  Who knew there was so much picturesque stuff all in one little area!  Check out my favorites from our shoot…

Holly & Todd’s DUMBO Loft Wedding

Holly & Todd live in California but planned to be married here in Brooklyn, down at the Granite Prospect in Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Since it looked like rain pretty much all afternoon the ceremony was moved indoors to their reception venue, The DUMBO Loft, which turned out to be a very wise choice indeed.  Ryan and I kept poking our heads out to see if it had stopped raining so we could take the couple out for a quick set of portraits outside– not until the very end of the evening did it really let up much, and we finally snuck them outside for a quick handful of pictures.  This was a cozy indoor affair all around… Holly and Todd were in excellent spirits despite the change of plans, they are such a fun & laid back couple.  Holly has a baby on the way, and she looked SO gorgeous in this dress, it was absolutely perfect for her!   Congratulations, Holly & Todd!

Amy & Andrew’s First Anniversary (Maternity!) Shoot

It’s been only a year since Amy & Andrew tied the knot down at Housing Works Bookstore but much has happened– they moved to the midwest very shortly after the wedding and then not long after the move decided to have a baby and got pregnant as soon as they started trying. I was thrilled to hear from Amy that they’d be in the city visiting on their anniversary and that she wanted to surprise Drew with a little portrait shoot– what better way to celebrate this pregnancy and their anniversary at the same time. Since we did their engagement portraits in Grand Central and their wedding was itself in the heart of SoHo we did this shoot up in Central Park so they could get a little more greenery in the pictures this time around. They brought along a couple of cupcakes from Magnolia bakery– the same ones they had served as the ‘wedding cake’ one year ago– and Drew made reservations for them to have dinner at the same restaurant that he originally proposed to Amy at!  I was so honored that they shared a little piece of their one year anniversary with me, that was so cool!  They are just as sweet as ever and I can’t wait to (I hope) one day meet their little one on the way!  Congratulations Amy & Drew!

Steven & Michele’s Wedding: Edison Ballroom in Times Square

Steven & Michele were married in a unique and dramatic theatre-style space called the Edison Ballroom, just off Times Square.  Theirs had to be the most lively and exciting Hora I’ve ever seen– but then again I’d never shot an orthodox Jewish wedding, and this had many elements from more traditional ceremonies, including a separation between the men and women dancing on two sides of the floor for much of the Hora! At a certain point they were both hoisted on top of tables (after a round of chairlifting also) and they threw the handkerchief back and forth over the curtain that split the dance floor. It was so fun to shoot this part of the reception, I just loved every minute of it… I love so many of the shots I got on the women’s side– Michele was so full of joy, her face was amazing during this dance. Meanwhile the men’s side was as frenetic as a mosh pit at one point, there was such physical group dancing going on, it was awesome to behold. I could go on for a while about what a unique space Edison Ballroom was, but I will let the photos speak for themselves. After they got dressed Jeff and I escorted Steven and Michele to Times Square separately to set up their first look, and then we did a quick handful of couple portraits before heading back to the Ballroom (just as it started to rain!) for family and wedding party portraits, the Ketubah signing and ceremony, etc.  Thanks to Jeff & Nick for the excellent 2nd shooting and assistance.Another highlight involved the cake cutting– these two have a really fun relationship and it showed in their attempts to get cake all over one another.  Michele was radiating such a pure happy glow all day, you couldn’t help but smile just looking at her.   I was honored to be a part of this lovely celebration. Congratulations, Steven & Michele!

Gena & Josh’s Engagement Portraits: Lincoln Center and Central Park

Gena and Josh are getting married next summer at the Hyatt in Jersey City, which sits right on the water and has amazing views of New York City.  Though they reside in Boston I was thrilled to hear that they wanted to shoot their engagement portraits starting at Lincoln Center here in the city– they are both classically trained singers so it was a very fitting location.  Having never done a portrait session in Lincoln Center I was excited to check out the area so I arrived early and scouted around to find some choice spots– there was no shortage of inspiration, that’s for sure!  I couldn’t be more pleased with this shoot– Josh and Gena are adorable together and I loved the colorful outfits they wore– I am so looking forward to the wedding!  Congratulations, Gena & Josh, happy planning!
