Mike & Melissa’s Engagement Portraits in the West Village

Mike & Melissa are getting married this fall at Merchants House Museum, followed by an afternoon reception at Gnocco (yum!) and a karaoke after-party (fun!)  They wanted their engagement session in the West Village where they have some sweet history together including the restaurant they went to on their first date and the corner where Mike proposed marriage. When they met me just north of the West 4th Street subway stop I was delighted to see them wearing super happy colors in a similarly casual style– I knew this would be a fun shoot and I couldn’t wait to get some colorful backgrounds going with this vibrant couple. Mike & Melissa couldn’t be more natural together, they have a great chemistry that just tickled me to capture for them. I can’t wait for the wedding! Check out my favorites below…

Jesse & Jessica’s Wedding at Eolia Mansion in Harkness Memorial State Park, CT

My thoughts on this wedding can be summed up in one word: wow!  It is rare that we photographers get so much punch packed into one location– this park was gorgeous– it featured a mansion for the getting ready and cocktail/reception, a sweet little ampitheatre for the ceremony, and the options for portraits were almost overwhelming! After setting up their first look in a beautiful grape arbor type structure facing the Eolia Mansion’s gardens, we toured the grounds and within fairly quick walking distance I was able to get shots of Jesse & Jessica in tall grasses (rare!), amidst gorgeous giant trees, in front of a charming barn-like building, a tree with hearts/initials all over it, and later during the reception them down to the rocky shore for a portrait around sunset time. I could have shot portraits at this place all day, I barely even began to utilize the beautiful gardens, and didn’t have time to hit the sandy beach area… alas, next time! I hope to shoot at Harkness Memorial State Park again or at least take my husband there for a weekend getaway–what a relaxing and beautiful park! To make things even better Jesse & Jessica had a super sweet wedding that involved almost no “outside” vendors– in other words, everyone involved with their wedding (except the venue/caterer) was someone they knew personally! Jesse’s brother Kerk played the music for their ceremony, and their DJ, Christopher Torres, was a friend. The cake was made by the bride’s Grandfather, and the invitations were designed by Jessica’s sister (and maid of honor) Laura. Even I was an old friend of Jesse’s from Wesleyan.  To top it all off, Jesse arranged to serenade his bride during the reception with an Al Green cover with his brothers performing as his backup band.  So you can imagine with this DIY spirit what a warm-feeling celebration it was. Congratulations, Jesse & Jessica– you did it!  Check out my favorites from the day below…

Lauren & Rich’s Wedding at Liberty House

Lauren & Rich are one of those couples that you can tell just fit together– I sensed during their engagement session that their personalities complement one another really nicely and their wedding confirmed all my suspicions about what an awesome couple they are… With the support of their totally sweet families I know they will enjoy a truly amazing life together.  Lauren looked simply stunning in the beautiful lace gown she wore– I hadn’t seen a dress design like this before, maybe ever–  it was so unique and pretty I could hardly get over it.  Both creatives (Lauren is an artist and Rich an architect!), they planned a lovely wedding in a visually rich environment.  Since their wedding was at Liberty House in Jersey City we took the opportunity to shoot the couple’s first look and portraits in and around the very cool old train station (not in use, thus all the overgrown tracks in the backgrounds etc) right down the street by the water… I loved being able to do family portraits with the river and NYC in the distant background and on a hot day it was nice and breezy down there too.   The ceremony was outside in a lovely area where I was able to get the skyline up in the distance, and during the reception we were able to take advantage of the pretty views and set up an ‘open air photobooth’ out on the terrace– complete with an array of fun props that Lauren & Rich had gathered for their guests to take pictures with.   If you’re looking for a reception spot with great service (they had one of the most helpful and on-top-of-it Maitre D’s I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with!), ample space and pretty views of the city, Liberty House has it all and I definitely hope to shoot there again!  Congratulations to Lauren & Rich on a gorgeous wedding– everyone had a marvelous time and it shows in the photos!

EPIC!

Jenni & Brandon: Engagement Portrait walk from Times Square to Bryant Park

Jenni & Brandon are getting married at the Palm House at Brooklyn Botanic Gardens this December. They have a pretty special story, which I will give you a taste of here… they met at a trivia night at a bar… after talking a bit and thinking she was pretty cute, Brandon was wishing he’d gotten her number after leaving. Later that same night, they ran into eachother at a donut shop. Coincidence? I think not. Despite getting a second chance, the numbers were still not exchanged. If you’ve ever heard of “missed connections” on Craigslist, you’ll be moved to find out that indeed, there are cases where a couple finds eachother after missing their in-person opportunity to exchange information. Jenni & Brandon are such an example. It was obviously meant to be! They have a great energy around eachother and are clearly 100% psyched to be getting married. I had so much fun shooting this session– we romped around Times Square, which provided the perfect background for Jenni’s red dress– then for Bryant Park pictures she changed into a pretty blue dress with white polkadots. Just adorable with her pretty red hair. Check out my favorite shots from our shoot below… I can hardly wait til their wedding this winter!

Amy & Mike have a baby!

He’s precious and his name is Miles. Not too long after their wedding (which I had the honor of shooting!) Amy & Mike moved to Connecticut and have been taking leaps and bounds towards that idyllic family dream-life that sometimes seems like an unattainable mirage when you’re living here in New York City.  A few years later and they’ve got it all together– the country farmhouse with a white picket fence and a beautiful baby to match!  I couldn’t be happier for these two– it’s such a treat for me to get to shoot baby and family portraits for couples whom I got to know for engagement and wedding photography.  Knowing that my photos will be a cherished part of their family’s history and that over time the images will be shared with children and grandchildren– this is the kind of stuff that makes me feel really blessed.  Check out this adorable boy of theirs– doesn’t he look just like Mike?! I made some family portraits and some baby portraits both indoors and out at their beautiful home.  Thanks to their good friend Carli for gifting them this baby session– I know they’re going to treasure the images! Gift certificates are always a wonderful present for couples who may be pregnant… who doesn’t want an awesome family portrait session?  Do inquire if you’d like to know more!
