Katie & Sharmilan: Wedding at Buttermilk Falls Inn

Katie & Sharmilan got married at one of my favorite locations I’ve shot at in the last few years– Buttermilk Falls Inn in Milton, NY.  Just over an hour from the city this picturesque venue is nestled along the Hudson River and features duck/geese ponds, pretty little bridges, rolling hills and giant weeping willows.  Oh and practically a field of beautiful day lilies!  They had their ceremony outdoors on a slope towards the pond, followed by a cocktail hour and tent reception down near a patio with a view towards the river.   This one will be tough to blog about in terms of conveying how pretty all the choices were– you may just want to skip to the images!   Everything was SO beautifully planned and had such lovely personal touches, such elegant style… everything fit the couple’s personality and had that inviting warmth that the best wedding celebrations are so rich with.  The ceremony featured such sweet readings and even a sing-along.  Their cute-as-can be dog, Wilbur, was walked down the aisle as the ringbearer to everyone’s delight.   For tablescapes the couple chose (and had Katie’s father send all the way from Britain) to use colorful old tea-tins for the gorgeous centerpieces and beautifully arranged fruit on cutting boards atop burlap runners— pretty pink-rimmed china plates displayed letterpress menu cards with mouthwatering descriptions of the caterer’s farm-to-table dishes.  The band, whom I’d had the pleasure of seeing before, has got to be one of the best bands you can book for a wedding around here– and they did not disappoint.  After a heartwarming set of toasts (Sharmilan’s brother’s speech brought tears to my eyes!) the crowd was ready to get down!  I was able to squeeze in a few shots of the after party in the barn before heading back to New York City.  Thanks again to Jeff & Nick for their excellent 2nd shooting and assistance on this wedding.

Marisa & Nolan’s Wedding: Housing Works Bookstore in SoHo

Marisa & Nolan chose Housing Works Bookstore for their wedding– a location I’ve grown very fond of the more I shoot there.  I met them at the Crosby Street Hotel and we did a little portrait walk up from there up the street and around a block to the street outside the bookstore where we met their family.  Since the bookstore staff was busy transforming the interior into a wedding venue we went ahead and took care of all the family group pictures outside in a quiet alley nearby with a simple brick wall for a background.  Once we were allowed inside I finished up the last groupings in front of a pretty bookshelf, and then it was on to the Ketubah signing downstairs while their guests began to arrive and were enjoying a cocktail hour upstairs.  In lieu of a guestbook (and in keeping with the bookstore theme) Marisa & Nolan had utilized an adorable “card catalog” drawer to give guests a way to write their best wishes or a note of advice to the couple.  The marriage itself was performed by Rabbi Hirsch under a traditional Chuppah, and I must say their Cantor had an amazing voice– he even got everyone to sing along with him during the sweet processional music– which was a particularly moving way to start the ceremony.  Immediately following the ceremony the chairs were whisked away and the crowd was swept up in the Hora dance, complete with chair-lifting and everything. Following this guests sat down for a meal and were treated to not only the traditional toasts but a fully prepared skit depicting the couple’s story performed by Marisa’s sister and friends!  You can bet there were some big laughs.  Though the dance floor itself is on the smaller side, the HWB has a wrap-around balcony that enables folks who want to watch the action stay close but not be in the way– just one of this cozy venue’s many perks.  The Works Catering is always top notch (as I’ve mentioned here before)– they always have some delicious vegetarian plate for me too, which is extra nice after a long day of shooting.  After the eating and more dancing, I took Marisa & Nolan outside for a few minutes to snap an atmospheric night portrait of them on Crosby Street’s cobblestones.  I am so happy for this sweet couple– they are so obviously perfect for eachother and I can’t wait to see where life’s adventure takes them.  Congratulations, Marisa & Nolan!

By the way, this “lightbox” above is a new feature of my improved new blog here– once you click on any picture you can hit ‘next’ and go through them all nice and big if you like, but you can see all the thumbnails here very small for reference, which I think is neat.  If you feel like commenting I’d love to know if people prefer to scroll down through lots of large images like I normally have shown them (though it makes the page take longer to load) or if they enjoy this presentation more.  Thanks for the feedback!

Rorie & Adam’s Engagement Portraits: Meatpacking District and High Line Park

First of all, check out the new blog!   I’m still going to probably be tweaking a few things here up in the header maybe but it’s pretty much ready to go and I can’t wait to start posting here– already migrated all the old stuff so it’s all in one place (my older posts can’t necessarily look formatted like the new stuff with bigger images, sadly, but everything going forward will have nice big galleries and/or slideshows embedded.)  NOTE:  For those of you who were subscribed to my old blog at wordpress.com, I don’t know if this post is going to automatically be sent to you or what– I really hope that it is– maybe one of you can comment or email me to let me know if you got it as usual so I know?  If I get nothing I’ll figure out a way to contact you all with the new location to resubscribe… ok?… Now on to the post at hand!

Rorie & Adam are getting married next summer at The Palm House at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  I couldn’t have been more delighted to book their wedding– I *so* love shooting at BBG– it’s just a magical venue, and their staff always brings serious A-game to each wedding.  Rorie and Adam have plenty of time but wanted the chance to make a “Save the Date” card featuring an engagement portrait from our session, so we decided to go ahead and shoot this summer before it got too hot outside (and we did it just in the nick of time!) When we discussed locations for the shoot I was excited that they wanted to shoot in this area (meatpacking district, high line) as it offered the perfect combination of cobblestone streets, hip city vibes and of course the unique look of the high line park never disappoints.  It’s funny, a few years ago everyone was asking for Central Park– this year’s most popular pick has been the West Village (various spots within) and High Line Park.  I’ve enjoyed getting to revisit a neighborhood like this– it challenges me to keep finding fresh spots and perfecting my use of backgrounds and angles I may have utilized before, so I’ve really been pushing myself and I think it’s paying off.  I think I’ve done some of my best work this year… one thing I just love about this career is the continuous and *tangible* sense of being better than I was in the past…  That sounds simple but it’s very motivating– every wedding or e’session I shoot I want to top what I did at the last one… of course every couple and location is different but that drive to make something more perfect is very enjoyable for me.  Over the years one can really see a difference in the quality of work one puts out, and that is just so rewarding to experience.  So… but… back to Rorie and Adam… what a CUTE COUPLE!   I loved their energy together, they were totally game for anything and we really had a great time with this shoot.  I can only imagine what a fun wedding they’ll have.  My favorite shots are below, BIG and BEAUTIFUL on my NEW BLOG!!!  Enjoy…

These photos are SO amazing thanks to the photographer behind them-Sarah Tew Rocks! We had a blast with this shoot and Sarah has an impeccable eye for creativity-finding the best shots the city has to offer. We chose our location because we had both our first date and first outing together in the area-we could not be happier with the story these shots portray! Fun loving energy all around 🙂

The Wedding of Sarah & Kris: Notre Dame, Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and Meadow Wood Manor

Sarah & Kris couldn’t be a more picture perfect couple. I booked their wedding from afar– Sarah & Kris live in Seattle but  they planned their wedding to happen in her parents’ church, Notre Dame in North Caldwell, New Jersey.  Normally I meet with clients in person before a wedding, both for a consultation and for the engagement session, so I was delighted to meet these two and find them to be absolutely sweet together– and I was blown away by the gorgeous dress Sarah picked out from Lea-Ann Belter!  I arrived early with Zack and we split up to shoot bridal details and Sarah’s makeup and hair– the artist, Magda Nyitray, was finished early, which was lucky, as Sarah ended up needing a bridesmaid to do a little sewing-fix for a broken hook-and-eye. You simply cannot plan too much cushion time in your wedding day for unexpected situations like this! I can always fill extra time with more pictures, after all… after their lovely church ceremony the wedding party and family units and us all drove over for a round of group pictures at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum… having completed the family groups and wedding party we let them all head to the reception at Meadow Wood Manor while Zack and I finished up with a quick set of couple portraits (which I’m so pleased with!)  Cocktail hour was just getting under way when we arrived and the rest of the night was extremely well-orchestrated.  I’ve got to hand it to Meadow Wood Manor, they run a tight ship, and it shows in the service.  I have thought for years that everyone would be better served if the guests and photographers were fed simultaneously, so that we’re fed and finished by the time the toasts or parent dances commence– which usually happens right as we’re being told that our dinner is ready in some other room.  Unfortunately most venues feed the photographers and other vendors ‘after the guests’ as though they’re worried they’ll run out of food or something… but it makes for a really rushed scarfing-down of a plate of food, and meanwhile as the guests eat of course there’s very little for us to do but go around and shoot table portraits of folks who really don’t want to be photographed with food in their mouths… Anyhow this is the first and only venue I’ve ever been to that employed this timing, which was, as predicted, totally effective and awesome!  So Kudos to Meadow Wood Manor!  I was also impressed with their extensive desert bar spreads, which complemented the wedding cake by Gourmet Touch Bakery.   Nothing can make or break a wedding quite like the reception music, and we had some amazing dance floor action thanks to the fabulous Hank Lane Band.  I have never seen a groom so successfully dip a bride– and so FAR down low to the ground!  You could tell these two both love to go dancing, and so do a lot of their friends and family.  What a pleasure to capture this wedding!  Thanks and congratulations to Sarah & Kris!
