Sydney is sitting up!

Shari recently got in touch with me to plan a session for baby and family portraits with her first daughter Sydney. Since she was past the newborn stage and Shari wanted park portraits I suggested we wait til this baby girl could hold herself in a sitting position, thereby giving us more posing possibilities. I’m so glad we waited a few weeks– Brooklyn Bridge Park was beautiful and I found some sweet spots for Sydney to sit and explore. Check out my favorite shots below…

That’s a charming family session!

Kelly & Tom: 11.11.11 Elopement in Central Park!!

Kelly & Tom got in touch with me a few weeks ago about shooting (and being a witness for) their elopement ceremony in Central Park on 11.11.11. I am always so honored when I get to be a part of these intimate ceremonies– it’s so moving to see people who are in love take the step of committing to one another, but elopements are almost a different feeling– i’m witnessing a very private and sacred moment in their relationship, and I always get excited thinking about the images I take being shared with their friends and family who weren’t there, but will get to experience and share in the couple’s joy through my photographs. So it is with many congratulations to the family of Kelly and Tom that I present this slideshow and blogpost!

Julie & Rebecca: Married at Housing Works Bookstore!

Julie & Rebecca were referred to me by their venue, Housing Works Bookstore, where I’ve become a regular recommended vendor… I’ve so enjoyed returning to this venue and getting to see how different couples utilize the interesting and beautiful spaces of this bookstore to bring their celebrations to life!  Since the sun was setting so early (4:30pm, if you can beleive that) I met them for a portrait-walk around SOHO before we were going to go in and get set up for the ceremony… we had just enough time for a really fun round of shots in the blocks surrounding Housing Works– but you know me, I can shoot portraits of couples for hours so I was sad when it started getting dark– Julie and Rebecca have such a totally relaxed and close chemistry together, so they were absolute naturals at having their picture taken! We went inside and did some family group portraits and a Ketubah ceremony with their officiant, Rabbi Diana Miller.  Then the guests started streaming in and taking their seats for the main event.  It was very moving– it always is– but this was the first full-scale-reception-included event I’ve shot for a same sex couple since New York legalized same sex marriage, and as you can imagine, the emotions were strong and the joy in that room was palpable.  After the ceremony there were cocktails and a righteous first dance followed by the Hora.  The dancing was fantastic at this event, as was the music… great DJ’ing by Cat of Two Hearts Beat-– I think you might be my new favorite wedding DJ!  Congratulations, Julie & Rebecca– you two are perfect together!

The beautiful long necklace you see on Rebecca is from Plume.

Julie wore a stunning suit from Comptoir Des Cotonniers…. Rebecca’s Hair was done up by Esther Ahn, and she is wearing a dress from Helmut Lang.

Rebecca’s shoes are from Anthropologie.

I had scouted the area just before meeting them and asked if this funny little shop would let us shoot for a minute under their carousel horse… Usually people are more than happy to let me shoot a couple getting married in their establishment if I’m quick 🙂

Flowers were done by Julie’s Aunt– I just loved seeing them all here on the book-cart as they were preparing to set them out on the tables!

Julie & Rebecca’s Ketubah and Invitations were created by Eliza Jane Curtis.

After the Ketubah ceremony guests were allowed to enter and sit down for the main event… though the space is small, it’s cozy and the energy in the room was wonderful as Rebecca and Julie circled each other at the Chuppah, below.

After a series of sweet thoughts on Julie & Rebecca’s relationship expressed by friends and family, they exchanged their vows, and broke a glass.  Mazeltov!

Great shot above from Dmitry, my 2nd shooter on this wedding!

Recognize this move?  This is their first dance.  Any guesses yet?

They did the first part of their choreography on the upper level (balcony) and danced their way downstairs…

That’s right… they had the time of our lives.

Rebecca’s mom couldn’t contain her delight– Dirty Dancing was one of her favorite movies– and yes, the choreographed dance was a total surprise to most everyone at the wedding (except their choreographer friend who helped them learn it and a few other “backup dancers” for the ensemble part towards the end…)

Time for the Hora, everyone!

I first saw this on Offbeat Bride. I love how you captured their day and all the emotions. I hope someday same sex marriage is legal here in Montana.

Wow! Amazing photography!

Zackary at age 3… child & family portraits at Brooklyn Bridge Park!

I’ve been shooting portraits of little Zackary since he was in Lydia’s belly, and I must say I just love it when I get the chance to see him again and continue building this collection as we document his childhood– he’s grown SO MUCH since I last saw him, he’s just the cutest little man now… of course the cute little sweater/collared shirt his parents dressed him certainly furthered that look, but still, his little legs and arms are getting so long!  His hair is as curly and soft as I remember it though.  I was thrilled to shoot with this family down at Brooklyn Bridge Park-– what an amazing playground– if you have kids of any age and haven’t been there I highly recommend it… they have everything you could want and more.  Plus that incredible rubber flooring that makes it feel like you’re walking around in the sole of a giant Croc sandal (and yes, these shoes are really comfy and I love them, though I stick to the more aesthetically pleasing ones!).  Zackary was really fun to shoot with, he warmed up to me pretty quickly and since he’s seen his previous portraits in a book I made for them last year he even had a shot or two he wanted to recreate.  Check out my favorite images… it was so hard to narrow them down for this post!

He was nervous about going on this slide but with a little help from Dad he tried it and decided he liked it by the time he got to the bottom!

Zackary got SO into climbing in these web-things… said he was a spider!

After sliding himself he turned and got ready to “catch Dada”– so cute!

We played peek-a-boo on and off and at one point he ran all the way into these bushes to hide from me 🙂

I asked him to mess up his hair so it would be fuzzy on top for me… his curls remind me of Bob Dylan for some reason.

The big boy swings!

Could this hat be any cuter on him?

I was loving the fall foliage we found around the park– so much red, orange, and yellow while still plenty of green about.  Great material for background bokeh!

Thanks for another great shoot, Zackary– can’t wait til next time– you just get cuter and cuter every time I see you!
