Deanna & Aaron’s Wedding at Glen Island Harbor Club

When one of my very best friends, artist Julie Armbruster, told me that her brother Aaron was getting married I was so honored to hear that they wanted me to be their wedding photographer! Julie’s older sister Amy had one of the very first weddings I was ever asked to officially shoot, and Julie and her husband & musician Dave Reinhart‘s wedding came not long after that. Having met Aaron’s bride, Deanna, I knew it would be a special day– she was so excited about their lovely venue, the Glen Island Harbor Club, in New Rochelle, and I must say I was excited too– such a unique little spot with water views– and close to the city, too!  We planned for outdoor couple portraits and the usual groupings, hoping for nice weather, but of course when their wedding weekend rolled around it turned out to be extremely cold– so cold in fact, that it SNOWED for the first time this year… it started snowing shortly before their marriage ceremony and kept snowing throughout the afternoon reception.  It felt magical to watch them get married with a wraparound window view of winter’s first snow coming down.  The cocktail hour at Glen Harbour Club was the most luxurious feast I’ve seen in some time– table after table of delicious looking food… but hopefully guests saved room for the main course during the afternoon reception!  Deanna’s family is of Portuguese descent, and many members of her family had flown to the states to be here for the occasion– so they had hired a special band, Banda Navegantes, that could play music suitable for their traditional dancing, and it was especially fun to watch as their young american friends picked up the steps and took a turn around the floor.  To cap off their afternoon of celebration they got everyone up on the floor to encircle them as they danced to “I had the time of my life” song (from the finale of the movie Dirty Dancing)– and they even managed a lift– it was a feel-good moment if there ever was one.

The wedding rings were from Imperial Jewelers NY.

Dress by Justin Alexander, Shoes from Dyeables.

Florals were provided by Arcadia Florals, in Mamaroneck.

I had Aaron turn his back from the staircase so he could turn and see her in her dress for the first time as she descended…

By shortly before the ceremony, it had started to snow!

Guests began arriving and begain making their way upstairs in a ceremony room with wraparound windows overlooking the water.

I really enjoyed Aaron’s shoes– just an added dose of pizazz you don’t see at many weddings!

Cocktail hour was in a long room with windows facing out to the water.  This whole “club” is on its own tiny island, so most of the rooms have water views!

The placecards were on a table decorated with a number of framed photographs of couples from Deanna and Aaron’s family tree.  This re-occurring wheat twist motif added a nice touch to the wedding decor.

I love how the guests are all swinging their napkins in salute to the couple as they make their grand entrance!  Never seen this before– perhaps it’s a Portuguese tradition?  Fun stuff!

Deanna couldn’t help get emotional during the sweet toast from her sister and maid of honor, Christine.

Did I mention the Glen Island Harbor Club did a bang-up job with the food?  Each and every dish looked fantastic.

Flowergirl Julia and Ringbearer Dawson were cute as could be…

Dawson is, in fact, the son of Amy & Dave, whose wedding was one of my first jobs.  Meeting him for the first time was very special for me– and just look at the cute matching shoes they had him in!

I knew the way this dance floor was reflecting light from the windows would look great in black and white!

Deanna & Aaron’s cake was also provided by the house catering team at Glen Island Harbor Club.

Embracing traditions, Deanna shared a dance with her father and tossed the bouquet!

And here’s that lift I mentioned!  Way to go guys– congratulations on a great wedding!

Beautiful wedding great photos!! Deanna looked like a Princess.

Nicholas and Family at Central Park – 1 year old portraits!

Chris and Claire have lived in New York City for about 5 years but are soon to be moving back to Australia, to raise their baby Nickelus closer to their families. To capture this special time in their lives and preserve memories of walking Nick in Central Park, they contacted me for a fun and casual portrait session. This baby boy is so calm and sweet– he’d had a good long nap earlier in the day so he was just a sweetheart to be around and he smiles like a regular Gerber baby! Here are some of my favorite shots from our session…

Kate & Charley’s Wedding: Blessed Sacrament & Housing Works Bookstore

Kate & Charley have been together since they were students at Carleton College, and they are one of those couples that just seem totally relaxed together and you can just tell that they have each other’s back no matter what, it’s such a good fit.  My suspicions about how great they are together were confirmed by the toasts we heard at their wedding last weekend, at Housing Works Bookstore .  They wanted to have a mid-size yet intimate wedding with friends and family in attendance, many of whom came from the midwest for the occasion, and so a double-decker sightseeing bus was arranged to shuttle guests for a quick tour on the way from Blessed Sacrament, on the Upper West Side, down to the reception in Soho. My assistant photographer Zack rode the double decker while I rode the partybus downtown with the wedding party, snapping some shots as we went. By the time we made it through some tough traffic down to the bookstore it was fairly dark outside so I made some nice portraits of them upstairs amid the bookshelves, and got onto the fun business of capturing the details for their reception. What a beautiful job Michael Day did on the on this wedding– I feel so lucky to work with such talented vendors on weddings like this– his florals were perfect dressing for the long dinner tables.  Event planning was handled beautifully by Amanda O’Callaghan of The Works Catering.  During cocktail hour we were treated to the wonderful and romantic musical stylings of Lapis Luna…  I can’t say enough good things about this band, they sounded fantastic and chose some really great covers– just really great tunes to appeal to young and old guests.  Their music combined with the low lighting and candles provided the perfect atmosphere for cocktails and dinner… after which a more danceable playlist got turned up loud as folks migrated to the dancefloor!  I was able to steal Kate and Charley outside for a quick night portrait towards the end of the evening… if I hadn’t needed to take my equipment back to studio I would have been tempted to join this crowd at their well-publicized after party– check out the admission bracelets that they had out for guests to get into the club– such an awesome idea, and I bet it was a great party.  Congratulations, Kate & Charley, your wedding was fabulous!

Kate chose a elegant, *pocketed* (i love this) gown by Anne Barge, paired with these fun strappy sandal-heels below by Donald Pliner.

To accessorize with the gown, Kate selected this amazing necklace from Tejani.

Kate’s beautiful hair and makeup were done by Jenny at Robert Stuart Salon

Kate’s dog, Lily, was such a sweetheart.  If only she could have joined them in the ceremony somehow!  Alas most churches don’t allow dogs 🙂

After some family and wedding party portraits we loaded onto the respective buses (partybus for wedding party, doubledecker for guests), and headed down to the reception venue.  Here I am below art-ing it up with the party bus’s mirrored ceiling panel.  It was a long ride and I was determined to shoot something cool using that mirror…

These lovely wedding rings are from Cartier.  I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of shooting weddings at bookstores.  What can I say, I love books… AND they make great props for ring-shots!

Even before the candles were lit I was blown away by the prettiness of the tablescapes!  I love how they incorporated books into the decor.

Finally the doubledecker arrived and the guests explored the space during cocktail hour.

After guests were seated for dinner there were some wonderful toasts…

Kate & Charley thanked everyone for coming and invited them to the exciting after party– wristbands were provided to get everyone into the club…

After dinner the dancing commenced…

I love this shot of Charley below, playing with his wedding ring and grinning ear to ear!

And here we are just across the street from the bookstore… didn’t want to take them away from the party for long so we grabbed a few shots and headed back inside!

Katie & Jason’s Wedding at Battery Gardens, NYC

Let me just preface this with a warning… this is a long blogpost.  I selected way too many pictures to share, I couldn’t help it.  Battery Gardens is awesome and so are Katie and Jason… whose engagement portraits you may have seen here this spring.  As most New Yorkers have found themselves commenting on the weather lately– it’s been a bit odd.  Last Saturday was no exception– it was crazy windy.  So windy, in fact, that Katie & Jason opted to have their wedding ceremony upstairs indoors at Battery Gardens instead of outdoors.  But we did not let said wind stop us from making some great images of them outside.  Indoors, the ceremony was in a beautiful area with light streaming in from low in the sky–we could see the Statue of Liberty up there through the giant wraparound bay of windows, very pretty in person but made for a challenge in terms of exposure during the processional, as one person’s face or half their body would be in bright sun and the rest of them/the person they’re walking with was in comparative shadow.   In any case the ceremony was really sweet–Katie and Jason wrote their own vows of course, and as soon as they’d finished their moments alone afterwards I swept them right back outside for some “just married” portraits that could take advantage of the sunset sky… after a few minutes of this we headed back into find cocktail hour buzzing right along beautifully in the first floor space, with some guests even venturing out onto the patio to enjoy the fresh sea breeze.  Meanwhile the staff reorganized the top floor for the reception, and I got there in time to make a nice room-shot after the candles were all lit but before the guests started flowing in– always a tricky moment to snatch!  What a beautiful venue– the views, the patio, the elegant bar area for cocktails, this place has it all.  I found the Maitre’D’ and staff to be particularly courteous and helpful throughout the evening– they really know what they’re doing down there and I hope to shoot there again sometime, perhaps when it’s less windy… Here’s a smattering of my favorite shots from the night.  Kudos to my assistant shooter Dmitry for capturing some great angles on the Hora chair-lifting while I was getting the wide shots from up on a chair!  He was also just in the right place to get some beautiful shots of Katie tearing up during a very moving toast from her father.  Did i cry?  Um, yeah.  Seeing her Dad sing to her after telling her what an amazing person she’s grown into was one thing but seeing the emotion overcome her just took me over the edge.  I’m telling you, I love weddings.  LOVE THEM!

Katie’s dress was by Matthew Christopher.

I loved this shot I got of Katie’s mom looking on as the bridesmaids helped her get her dress on… the bridal suite at Battery Gardens was a comfortable size, and I liked shooting against these green curtains.

Shoes by Best Ballroom Shoes.

Katie’s hair was done by Stacy Pitt, makeup was by Nicole Sievers.

These beautiful florals were done by Rose Red & Lavender.

Meanwhile I had Dmitry out shooting the fellas getting their bout’s on and getting ready for the couple’s “first look” as we call it.

He looks excited right?  The were so cute together… it was pretty windy at this point so I had picked the most sheltered-yet-pretty spot that was nearby and had Dmitry tell Jason to face away from the building so Katie could sneak up behind him and tell him when to turn around…

This was one of a very few spots that was somewhat sheltered from the wind– lucky for me the structure behind them had a lovely ivy-covered wall…

Loving this shot of Jason’s dad watching them together shortly after first look… he looks so proud and happy for them!

After that round of portraits and family shots we retreated inside where the families convened with the wonderful Rabbi, Marcia Rappaport, for the signing of the Ketubah, which was a beautiful creation by Jennifer Raichman.

While we were busy with the Ketubah, guests were arriving– upon entering the building they saw a lovely display of family photographs…

And they were able to hang out in the bar/cocktail lounge area…The invitations, seating cards, and program were all designed by the wonderful Rebecca Hume…

Once the guests were all seated upstairs, the ceremony began.  They walked in to a beautiful song– The Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields!

After a few minutes alone together, I was able to steal them outside (and the wind had died down a bit, thankfully!) for another quick set of portraits– I simply had to take advantage of the sky… it was better and better right until dark!

I love playing with old fashioned film-looks when I’m processing pretty portraits like this.  Warm tones were calling to me for the below portrait of them with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Isn’t this patio fantastic?  I love the way they put lanterns in the tree… this was later during cocktail hour.  The scene below shows the interior of the ground floor of Battery Gardens from above the bar…

We move upstairs for some shots of the reception room before everyone came upstairs…

Their guestbook was laid out on a table for gifts that featured more family photographs arranged… right next to that we set up our open air photo studio… and now it’s time for the reception!

These moms looked so elegant!  Great dress choices, you two!

I love it when the grandparents get out on the floor!

Being a fellow wesleyan graduate I knew the crowd at Katie’s wedding would not disappoint– they brought their dancing shoes!  The great tunes provided by DJ Rob Kelley made for an excellent party atmosphere.

Toasts were touching at this wedding– much was said about what genuinely good and caring people Katie and Jason have grown up to be– and from my experience this couldnt’ be more true!

Did I mention Katie’s dad sang to her?  Yeah, it was moving.

Time to “cut” the darling and delicious “cake” by Bee’s Knees Baking Co.

Also–Jason & Katie had me bring my open air photobooth setup for their reception– we did a small version with my velvety woodgrain background– check out the results in the slideshow below!

Here’s what we set out for the guests to use… they take their own pictures with the wireless transmitter you see there on the table.  The login-cards featuring engagement portraits show people the address and password for the full gallery (so they can order prints if they wish) after the wedding…
