Amy & Andrew’s Engagement session: Grand Central to Bryant Park

Amy & Andrew are getting married this September at Housing Works Bookstore and found me through the Works Catering, whom I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside at several weddings (Cheryl & Brian, Adam & Shireen…). I was so pleased when they mentioned Grand Central as a starting point for their shoot– they work in a building right upstairs, so it means something to them… I’d surprisingly never done portraits there and was excited to try it out as a location… Sure enough the lighting was dim and tricky, but as we explored this NYC landmark’s many ins and outs (finding lots of neat spots around the interior) I was glad we were indoors and out of the heat! It was so hot this weekend I almost thought we might postpone altogether but thankfully by Sunday it was less brutal, though still quite warm out. Once we hit the streets we headed down the block to shoot them in front of the Public Library, which is known for its gorgeous front stairs and columns… unfortunately there was a film shoot going on that obscured most of the exterior but I got what I could and cropped out the ugly stuff going on! We hit an ice cream truck and walked on towards Bryant Park, which was not far away, and proved an excellent spot full of fun surprises. I even got to use my new favorite toy, the star filter… check out my favorites!

I experimented with my fisheye a bit inside, hoping to get something i could crop in circular format… here are a few I like:

Not sure how often I would employ this approach, but hey, if you don’t try new things, you never make anything new, right?

Anna & Aaron’s Hometown Engagement Portraits in Short Hills, NJ

I’m so excited to be shooting Anna & Aaron’s wedding this fall at the Ritz Carlton at Battery Park. When we talked about engagement portrait locations there were two things that came to their minds– first was a beach day shoot (they spend time at the Jersey Shore every summer) and the 2nd was a shoot in and around their home town and high school, since that’s where they met. Since Short Hills, New Jersey is just a hop skip and a jump away via train I said sure thing, and boy am I glad I did. Believe me, I *never* get sick of shooting in NYC– this place is unbelievably rich for portrait locations– but I must admit it was refreshing to do a session in a smaller town I’d never explored before. Millburn, where they went to high school (and no, they were not dating at the time, though they both ran cross country on the school team)– Millburn was cute as can be. We shot in a pretty local park as well as hitting both their parents’ homes and backyards, and of course we had to go shoot some at their Alma Mater! Here are a few favorites from my shoot with Anna and Aaron– I can’t wait for their wedding, it’s sure to be gorgeous.

Cheryl & Brian’s Brooklyn Wedding: St. John’s Church and PowerHouse Arena

Cheryl & Brian got married on July 9th at St. John’s Church (lovely church!) in Park Slope.  They met and became friends when they were both volunteering at Housing Works, and so it was only natural for them to hire The Works to plan and cater their reception, which they had at another bookstore location– PowerHouse Arena, in DUMBO, Brooklyn.  After the ceremony guests were taken on a fun and scenic ride on a double decker tour bus over to the cocktail hour while we took the newlyweds for some portraits alone in front of the Church and down at Brooklyn Bridge Park while cocktail hour got started.

Cheryl’s dress was by Birnbaum & Bullock…

The ceremony at St. John’s was very pretty– I loved the interior here, elegant and colorful yet very simple elements.

Cheryl’s makeup was done by Francesca at Butterfly Studio…

To our delight Cheryl’s hydrangea-based bouquet matched the hydrangea bushes growing in front of the church– I just had to get this shot despite the scaffolding that was up while St. John’s is having work done.

Great shot in the “party bus” above shot by my 2nd shooter, Dmitry Gudkov.

As we neared the reception location Cheryl lifted the shades and I caught this lovely light on her face…

Brooklyn Bridge, a sunny (if windy) day, a happy couple… bliss.

The reception site, PowerHouse Arena is a spacious and unique DUMBO bookstore and event space.

plenty of room for a dance floor, cocktail hour, and lots of tables.

Mohitos were served during cocktail hour– they looked SO GOOD and everyone seemed to be enjoying them… perfect for a summer wedding.

Isn’t this a pretty space?  The flowers (more below) were all done by friend-of-the-bride, Shirin Keen… I loved the blue and yellow together.

The cake (so simple and pretty!) was by Made in Heaven Cakes-– inside was red velvet, one of my favorites.

Shirin is a lawyer, but I think she clearly has a knack for flowers.  Look at the way she arranged these stems and cut them perfectly so the blooms start right above the vases!  Just so simple and beautiful.

One thing that’s cool about PowerHouse Arena’s space is that there’s a big set of steps over by the dance floor area– perfect for guests to lounge and chat during your reception and cocktail hour.  We even did some posed family group shots staggered up around some of the stairs.

Another element Shirin incorporated into this modern flower design was the use of driftwood pieces and simple candles.

There were lots of cute kids running around at this wedding–which is always fun to photograph–  check out a few of my favorite shots of them.

And finally, after it got dark I made sure to steal the couple for a few minutes and get a nice portrait of them down by the water with the bridge and manhattan lit up in the background (this is the Manhattan Bridge which is so pretty at night).

And I snagged this fun action shot as Cheryl walked back to the reception. I just can’t get enough of her pretty smile– that Brian’s one lucky guy!

Below is a slideshow of highlights from the open-air photobooth we set up on the 2nd level (upstairs from the reception) at PowerHouse.  It was a perfect spot for people to get away and get silly taking their own pictures for a few minutes…

Michael & Kimberly’s Wedding– featuring Sassy ‘n’ Brassy DIY decor!

Michael and Kimberly wanted to have a wedding close enough to NYC that their friends here could easily come– they found the most charming little venue called The Woman’s Club in Englewood, NJ that was about 20 minutes out of the city, where they could have their ceremony outdoors and their reception in a room just the right size for their party.  I just love what they did with the decor– as my blogpost title indicates, they did a lot of it themselves (DIY), gathering together a collection of unique vintage brass pieces to decorate the tables with as well as arranging their own flowers (you’d never know these weren’t done by a professional, I think Kim may have a second career awaiting her in floral design!), candles, tissue poms, and other unique crafted decor.  For their favors they gave away pieces of organic chocolate from Sweetface— and I must tell you it was delicious!  Not only did this couple display an enormous committment to making their wedding their own, their guests totally tore down the house.  I mean that in a good way– the dancing at this party was over the top– it was joyful, let-loose, make-funny-faces-when-we-dance kind of crowd (my favorite kind!)– and towards the end of the night there was some serious showmanship out there on the floor.  Take a look at some of my favorite shots from this sweet wedding– Congratulations, Michael and Kimberly!

For those of you wondering, this dress is by Saja.  And yes, those are easels!  There is some sort of artists’ atelier on the 2nd floor of the Woman’s Club. (I keep wanting to write Women’s Club but apparently this is how it’s spelled.  Sorry all you other women out there who want to join!)

Rings by Bell and Bird.

Such a lovely assortment of color and flower-style… each table had a unique arrangement and different brass decorations and bells…

Old wedding pictures from the family adorned the staircase to the bridal suite where Kim got ready.

Michael said they found most of these cool brass bells and ornaments on Ebay!  It looked fantastic.

I just love this shot.  She’s putting some (very natural) makeup on before she puts on her dress and the bathroom was pretty small but I knew if I got low and backed up i could hide my reflection behind her and get this cool symmetry.  Couldn’t WAIT to put this in black and white…

This little guy was a total cutie.  Had the whole crowd laughing when he walked down the aisle and went straight to Michael’s leg and didn’t want to leave…

Their officiant, Maureen Jeffries, did a really nice job– and Michael and Kim had very thoughtful and personal vows, of course!

Now that is how you do it!  Am I right, ladies?  What a sweet kiss!

Had to pose them in front of the vintage mercedes (Grandpa’s) since it was right there…

Here’s their SO YUMMY carrot cake by Blue Sky Bakery, complete with vintage style wedding topper:

Their DJ, Mr. Fine Wine, pretty much RULED.  He was spinning incredible soul, funk, and vintage rock’n’roll vinyl all night long.  I think they found him via a WFMU show.

And now you see my favorite new little trick: the star filter 🙂

An improvised dance with a couple of the tissue poms from a guest…

Some ties came off…

A little breakdancing…

Now here is something you don’t see every day:  A BRIDE DOING A FULL SPLIT ON THE DANCE FLOOR!!!

This was magical…Sarah Tews caught it all! Everytime I see Tomaso it makes me smile even more:)

Photobooth for Michael & Kimberly’s Wedding!

Last night I had the pleasure of looking through the photobooth images captured by guests at Michael and Kimberly’s wedding.  Their guests had a great time playing in the little room I set up with our “open air photo booth”– which accommodates a handful of people at a time, and there’s a wireless trigger system hooked up to my camera and lighting so that the guests can shoot themselves and get silly.  I usually provide something to play with, like these dry-erase thought bubbles and in this case some “glasses” in honor of the groom’s dark rim glasses and mustaches (or, as some guests creatively used them, eyebrows!) just because they’re fun…  Check out what they did!  Music by Louis Armstrong.
