I’m so excited to be shooting Tracey & Ben’s wedding this August up at Alder Manor, an amazing 1912 mansion and estate a little ways out of the city (most often used for film shoots and the like, more recently opened up for wedding bookings) with dozens upon dozens of rooms and unique gardens and landscaping! The location is just perfect for this couple as they have a refined appreciation for vintage aesthetics, and I can’t wait to see what they do with their wedding up there– it sounds like they’ve been working really hard on some exciting elements. For the engagement shoot they put no less thought into details– Tracey and Ben decided to have me shoot them in their apartment, capturing first a series of scenes from their lives together (what fun!)– from cooking to “gardening” (they have some serious container crops goin’ on!) to relaxing together with their laptops… I really enjoyed capturing theses vignettes. Then we went for a walk from their apartment over to Central Park, which they enjoy living near, and of course I spotted a number of great locations to shoot on the way and we finished the session up in the park. They brought a couple cute hats, a pretty old rainbow umbrella, and we made it up as we went along. All in all this made for a really fun variety of portraits that totally captures their fun spirit and life together here in NYC. Thanks for the great shoot, Tracey & Ben– I can’t wait for your wedding!
Kate found out about me through her wedding venue– Housing Works Bookstore, and their event team, The Works Catering. I will be shooting her and Charley’s wedding there this coming October and am so looking forward to it– it’s always so refreshing to shoot a wedding in a non-typical venue like a bookstore– I love it when places present interesting and unexpected visual opportunities! For their engagement session we decided on Central Park Conservatory Gardens for a starting point. When I met them they told me it was actually the 1 year anniversary of Charley’s proposal! I couldn’t help but feel like it was a perfect time for their engagement shoot. WE strolled through the garden (which *note* does require a permit, so be sure to plan well in advance if you want to do a shoot there!) and I got to work in some really inspiring spots. After an hour there we hopped in a cab and headed to the meatpacking district and the ever-crowded-yet-always-perfectly-wonderful High Line Park to conclude the session. Now normally I can fill 2 hours with just a walk around one neighborhood, but give me 2 fantastic spots to shoot and watch out– (there were so many great locations, I couldn’t help myself). Lo and behold before I knew it the sun is going down and we’re all growing hungry for supper. Thanks for being so great to work with, you guys! I think you’ll be delighted with the fruits of our labor– check out my favorites below!

Katie was in my class at Wesleyan and not long ago she got in touch to tell me about her engagement to marry the charming and talented Jason (a comedy writer! PERFECT for her!) So I’m thrilled to be shooting her wedding this fall at Battery Gardens and I couldn’t wait to shoot their engagement session and get to know this fellow a little bit. To my delight they have a really great chemistry and super-fun rapport. And they had so much fun with their session– I was particularly gratified by this session because I finally made some portraits under the “superior” (sewing machine company) signage I’d had my eye on for YEARS, hoping one day I’d be in the neighborhood with a couple I could photograph there… turns out it was my lucky day! Not only that but we found so many neat spots all within a few blocks of Madison Square Park, our starting point. Katie and Jason, thanks for the great shoot! You two were awesome to work with and I just love so many of the shots we got this is going to be a long post… forgive me! [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xkx-w8NcE0I&w=425&h=344]
The New York Times announcement application requires an 8×10 format portrait of head/shoulders– with “even eyebrows”… so this is our shot to submit above. They’re so strict, it’s kind of funny.
beautiful!
OMG….you guys make me so happy! I can’t stop crying, how cute!)
[…] Gardens is awesome and so are Katie and Jason… whose engagement portraits you may have seen here this spring. As most New Yorkers have found themselves commenting on the weather lately– […]
Samir contacted me not too long ago wanting to arrange for me to shoot (in spy-fashion of course) his proposal to his beloved Reena. After brainstorming with me and scouting some locations he decided to do it at Brooklyn Bridge Park with the skyline as a backdrop. I met him at the park for a consultation/planning session and we worked out our signals and planned to text eachother for last minute communications. After a week of crazy heat (thankfully I was out of town!) Saturday (June 10th) arrived and it was of course, nearly raining all day. One of those fine mist-like rains that’s neither here nor there– one feels silly walking with an umbrella, yet without one you get pretty damp after a few blocks. I arrived at the agreed upon spot and lucky for us the rain was keeping our park nice and empty, except a few hardcore joggers and dog-walkers. I texted Samir that he should bring her to location “A” (our first choice spot) as it was all clear. They took the water taxi over (romantic!) and strolled through the park to kill time before their dinner reservation (or so she thought)… and then… once they got up to the edge of the park (and had walked past me, sitting their reading a book on a bench) he turned her to face him and got down on one knee… I couldn’t hear how he phrased it but it must have been very sweet… she fell to her knees and hugged and kissed him before he put the ring on her finger. Afterwards he told her I was there to shoot it for them and she changed into the heels she brought for dinner and we made a few sweet portraits around the park as they walked to the restaurant to meet her whole family– whom he had secretly planned to have visit for the occasion! Congratulations on your engagement, Samir and Reena!

So this week i’m in LA shooting at E3 for CBS Interactive (for slideshow content and press conference live-blogging photo contribution). Once in a while I get sent out to do an expos like this, it’s generally pretty tiring and stressful (though not like wedding stress, a totally different animal.. i never, for example, shed happy tears during the peaks of a press conference!), as it involves walking around looking for and shooting a lot of things off lists for hours navigating a hectic show floor with crowds of people, all of whom are busy oggling things and not looking where they’re going and wandering slowly with bulky backpacks on. This show is no exception. Monday kicked it off with a series of press conferences, all in different locations around LA… the driving between was the worst. They are not kidding about traffic here. It sucks. The last “presser.” hosted by Sony, was by far the most fun however, as there were food trucks and an open bar when we walked in and waited to be let into the venue, and then as a surprise concert after the press conference… who played? Jane’s Addiction! I got tipped off that it would be them by one of my colleages and sure enough I went down to look at the setlist on stage and it was definitely them. Now, granted, it’s been a long time since i put on one of their (the two first ones anyway) records, but I was into their music back in the day enough to be pretty psyched to see them perform — I never did when I was young. Being an audience of press and photographers / videographers, the front row was littered with pros weilding cameras. It was a funny thing to be up there, all of us shooting like crazy, and Perry Farrell, obvious maniac that he is, ate up every ounce of the attention. The band played a nice set that included some of my favorites, Three Days, Jane Says, and Mountain Song, Stop, and of course they did play the single that MTV loved to play, Been Caught Stealin’. Apparently they are putting out a new album so they played a song off that too (it was Meh)… who knew.
Now, i must tell you that Dave Navarro was pretty fun to watch. He sort of looks photoshopped in a funny way. Like, the guy must be on human growth hormone or something, i mean, isn’t he like almost 50? And yet… he appears to be 25 still some how. Check it out.
Ummm, yeah, they had some pseudo-strippers come out and dance seductively with gags in their mouths during the set. Unnecessary if you ask me but the crowd loved it. Target audience? Male journalists who write about video games for a living 🙂
these are fantastic! what a great surprise!
You are amazing Sarah! Love your work.
