Amy & Jon’s Engagement Portraits at Central Park

Amy & Jon had attended a wedding I shot last summer– Anne and Bret for those of you keeping track– and they got in touch about having me shoot their wedding this fall.  I’m so glad they did– these two were a delight to work with.  Jon is hilarious and Amy is just a doll to shoot.  And.  Astonishingly…  they brought a full picnic to the park, complete with my favorite cheese in the world (Manchego, hint hint), a fresh bagette, sparking cider, grapes, and fancy CUPCAKES!   They even brought one for me, so thoughtful!  Normally I don’t bother asking people to think of or bring any props for e’shoots… why?  Well, because generally we’re walking around and any given prop is not going to be shot for more than one or two locations (the balloons aren’t engaged, YOU are) and then you’ve got to either trash it or stash it in what is usually an already cumbersome consolidated bag of both your necessary-to-carry-when-out belongings which we’re picking up and putting down each time I say “ooh over there!”  But unbeknownst to me Amy and Jon had this whole picnic AND the blanket it was laid out on in one little bag somehow, plates, wine glasses and all– it was such fun twist in the shoot and we found the perfect location for them to lay out their spread.  If you scroll down to the end you’ll see some picnic favorites (note Jon and Amy are excellent at catching grapes with their mouths) in addition to the other fun shots we got on that beautiful day.   Look for pics from their wedding come fall ’11!

As you can probably guess, he totally caught that grape in his mouth.  Very skilled, this couple!

Thanks Sarah! I love the moments you captured of Jon cracking open the cider and the grape action shot! You are the perfect blend of artistry and playfulness.

Donna Snyder, Amy's Mom - June 14, 2011 - 4:37 pm

I knew you were good Sarah but these are true art. You really captured Amy and Jon’s love for each other. From a very proud Mom. I was bursting to show my friends because the pictures are so lovely. I’m so glad they found you. Mama Snyder

Thanks, Donna! I look forward to meeting you at the wedding! I’m so glad they found me too, they’re just a fantastic couple aren’t they?

Deena & Joe’s Wedding at The Palm House, Brooklyn Botanic Garden

On May 21st after about a week and a half of nonstop rain, Deena and Joe tied the knot in a beautiful two-part ceremony (the first part being outside, the 2nd part being inside after a sudden rainfall surprised us in the middle of what was shaping up to be a surprisingly gorgeous day out!  Everyone ran inside giggling and holding programs over their heads– the wedding party was prepared with adorable matching umbrellas thanks to Deena’s careful planning, and they definitely made use of them!  A group of thoughtful gentlemen carried the cloth from the Hupa inside and held it for the remainder of the ceremony– I can’t even imagine how tired their arms must have been!  It was so moving to see this generosity and love, and the grace with which Deena and Joe rolled with the punches.  I can’t say enough good things about the Palm House staff– the ceremony was switched indoors almost SEAMLESSLY!  Almost no sooner had I walked indoors was everyone seated and these two were walking down Aisle Number 2! Thankfully we had already done a batch of nice portraits and family shots out in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden earlier.  We were there in a brief window where the bluebells are in full bloom, so of course we did their “First Look” out in the middle of this beautiful field of bluebells… check out some more of my favorites below.  I will have to do a 2nd blog post featuring their photobooth shots, which were lots of fun… more to come!

Great first look shot from across the bluebells by Dmitry, my excellent 2nd shooter!

I love the shot above… one of my favorites from the whole wedding!

I love this shot above, it’s right in front of the Koi Pond… (you wouldn’t know it from these portraits but the Garden was super crowded– everyone in NYC wanted to be outside enjoying the sunshine that Saturday– it had been raining here for LITERALLY a WEEK!)

Another sweet shot from Dmitry, shot from across the lilypads while I walked with them for some portraits around the gardens.

last minute preparations before the ceremony!  Ketubah signing below…

Weather looks great so far, right?

but then we felt some drops…

These guys above were the heroes of the wedding.  Great thinking, guys!  I swear within 5-6 minutes we were getting back to business inside The Palm House– such incredible work by their staff!

The above is from right after sweet toast from the mutual friend who introduced them:  Joe’s high school prom date and Deena’s good friend and bridesmaid!

Gorgeous shots Sarah! Deena and her friends and family were a pleasure to work with. So easygoing and fun. Looks like the wedding was beautiful.

Claire’s Maternity Portraits

Claire saw some of my maternity portraits for a client I worked with a few years ago and realized she wished she’d taken pictures when she was pregnant with ehr first child… now that she’s pregnant with her 2nd she didn’t hesitate to get in touch and book a session. So often I’m shooting women in their first pregnancy, so this was a treat because she wanted to bring her son and husband along for some group shots too. We started the session outdoors and once I had a few nice shots of the group and let them go for a walk while I got down to business with Claire inside. We wrapped the session with some final images of the family in my studio. Check out my favorites!

Cheryl + Brian’s engagement session in SOHO

Cheryl and Brian are getting married this summer at St. John’s in Brooklyn with a reception at PowerHouse Arena in DUMBO. To kick off their e-session we met at Housing Works Bookstore where they met and shot various scenes along the route down to City Hall Park– which was a gem of a location and I’m sure to revisit it for future sessions. So much going on down there, it’s funny I’d never used the spot before. Here are a few of my favorite shots from Saturday!
