On April 10th at approximately 12:45pm I had the amazing pleasure of shooting a real live proposal of marriage! Imran was the best man at one of my favorite weddings of 2010– he got in touch with me a month or so ago to find out if I might be able to stealthily shoot him proposing to his girlfriend in the park! I was all, “Hello, WINNING!” (and no, i didn’t actually say that!). We arranged to meet briefly at the park he wanted to propose in (Madison Square Park) and make a little gameplan– where for them to go so I could shoot them well with my longest non-obvious lens (the 70-200 is white and looks like a giant sports lens to most people, kind of eyecatching so I went with my 135 f2 L). We planned hand signals to let eachother know when we were ready and in position… Needless to say when the day came I got there about half an hour early just to scope it out. As I walked up to the park down Madison it became clear there was going to be a major festival taking place in the park– the Persian Parade was about to come down Madison with festivities and food happening right where we had planned to be. I texted Imran that this might be trickier than we thought… then I walked in and saw that it was not crowded– not yet anyway, and the circle around the fountain we had decided was our ideal spot was pretty open actually. Texted him again that all was well and waited. And waited. And tried to look nonchalant. The anticipation was crazy. I might as well have been the one who was proposing– my heart was beating so fast when they finally arrived and sat down… I had been the wedding photographer at a wedding she’d been to with him not even a year ago so I was a little nervous she might recognize me but it became clear he was keeping her engaged and she wasn’t really looking my way despite the fact that there was ANOTHER COUPLE getting an engagement session done about 20 feet to my left… this might have been a perfect distraction. Imran bent down to tie his shoes (my signal he was about to go for it) and luckily the sounds of the parade music were growing louder so i stood up with my camera and pretended I was there waiting to shoot the festival stuff while keeping him in my peripheral vision. The stealth element was SO FUN. The proposal went off without a hitch and she didn’t notice me shooting like crazy and walking over to get a different angle until it was all over– then this other couple on a bench nearby congratulated them and said they had just got engaged not long ago themselves… it was really sweet. I’m so thrilled to have be a part of this and to capture the special moments between them as this proposal unfolded. I love my job. What a lovely sweet couple. Congratulations!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdyLVBPFkSs&fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0]I’m excited to be hanging some of my home birth photographs printed and framed nice and big along a giant wall at the Concert for a Healthy Birth, a benefit concert hosted by Ricki Lake for Choices in Childbirth. Great organization, great cause. I’ll also be donating event photography that evening and I look forward to shooting Christy Turlington and others on the “red carpet!” Look for my post with images in mid-May!
A few weeks ago I shot a special tasting and networking event down at PowerHouse Arena in DUMBO– which is a big awesome bookstore slash event space where I’ll actually be shooting Cheryl & Brian’s July 9th wedding! Anyhow, since I’m currently a preferred photographer for The Housing Works Bookstore and The Works Catering was doing this event to show off their food– well, I got asked to come down and put out my portfolio and shoot the event! I got to meet some cool wedding coordinators, designers, some engaged couples, and of course Michael– an amazing florist who had donated some flowers for the event. Let me just say I think I have pretty good intuition about people and I liked Michael right away– when I got home and checked out his website for Michael Day Studio I was loving the flowers he puts together. I really hope I get to shoot one of his events sometime soon as he’s doing some excellent work out there… and what photographer doesn’t like shooting pretty flowers?! There was just one thing missing from his website though– a picture of Michael– which I think is always nice to have actually, and could be especially beneficial to him as a fun, charismatic, and friendly-looking guy! Today we met up for a quick mini-shoot in Madison Square Park and I turned the files around for him asap. He loved this one below– hope to work with you soon, Michael!
So after several years of dilly-dallying and perfectionist procrastination on design decisions I’ve actually got my new website up and functional… it’s not COMPLETE yet (i still have to fill out more of my portrait and personal/documentary/fine art work, and the logo is temporarily not working/fitting into the design so i may have to just suck it up and design a modified ‘words only’ logo like the type version seen there now… but i’ll still hold onto my signature logo for most other uses I think. It’s tough, i’m very attached to the logo i have currently (and yeah, i know it’s unreadable unless you already know my name, but i worked really hard on it and yes I did make it myself so i’m biased)… anyway check out my new site and let me know what you think!
Liz and Doug were married this past Sunday at The Boathouse in Central Park— it was rather freezing outside so we didn’t venture further than the terraces surrounding the building but I did manage to get some outdoor shots. Despite a couple of frustrations these two were able to enjoy their special day surrounded with the love of their friends and family. What frustrations? Oh, just that Doug’s car broke down in the middle of the Lincoln Tunnel ON THE WAY TO THE WEDDING! Somehow he still arrived in plenty of time for pictures before the ceremony and had a smile on his face. I think this takes the cake for laugh-about-it-later wedding day stories… and it’s got to be seriously amazing luck for their marriage (I totally believe in the bad things on wedding day = good luck in the big picture business..) This was a really nice wintry wedding and I was so pleased to be a part of it. On a sidenote, we also got to see some of the best wedding-guest dancing EVER… this one guy was incredible, wish I could take him to every wedding with me. I’m putting the slideshow on my facebook page– you can watch it in high-res there (much nicer than these little blog-size videos). Congratulations, Liz and Doug!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zAAyhr6Bag&hl=en&fs=1]While I was shooting with Liz, Jeff got some shots with the groom, fresh from his adventure with the car!
Would you know from his smile he’d just been through such an ordeal? He looks fresh as a daisy, right?
And now for their first look at eachother in their wedding attire… I pulled Liz out to the big bay of windows and let Doug sneak up to say hello…
Great shot from Jeff, my 2nd shooter for the day– he stayed back and caught this lovely backlighting from down the aisle…
And now to sign that Ketubah!
These flower girls were so funny– here they are playing around at the bar before the ceremony… just killin’ time!
Here’s a nice fisheye shot from the back of the aisle…the Boathouse is a lovely spot for a ceremony during day or night!
Cocktail hour along the pond-view windows of the Boathouse… lovely.
Liz threw her bouquet and it hit a chandelier and fell right back on the floor… I see this happen more than you’d think.
